Total Drama is a Canadian animated comedy television series which is a homage and parody to the conventions commonly found in reality television. The show, and its sequel seasons, are collectively referred to as the Total Drama series. It premiered on the Canadian cable television specialty channel Teletoon on July 8, 2007, and on the American cable television channel Cartoon Network on June 5, 2008.[4] All of the contestants have distinct personalities that serve as a main plot point with the characters consisting of the eponymous fictional reality series and the contestants therein. The style of this series is similar to that of Survivor, Fear Factor, and The Amazing Race.

The Total Drama series is the original series of the greater Total Drama franchise, which consists of five seasons that have aired in the past seven years: the first season, Total Drama Island, the second season, Total Drama Action, the third season, Total Drama World Tour, the fourth season, Total Drama: Revenge of the Island, and the fifth season, titled as both Total Drama All-Stars and Total Drama: Pahkitew Island. The latest installment premiered on July 7, 2014, in the United States[6] and September 4, 2014, in Canada.[7] There is also spin-off series based on this main series, The Ridonculous Race, which was produced shortly after the fifth season was aired.

As of December 2016, no future seasons are planned, therefore putting the series on hiatus. A renewal or cancellation is yet to be determined.

Format

The name of each season consists of the title Total Drama with a different word or phrase later added. That changing word or phrase defines the theme for that season. This series is a competition to win a cash prize of C$100,000 in the first season and C$1,000,000 in every other season. This series takes elements of other widely known series such as Survivor, Fear Factor, and The Amazing Race. Like these other series, Total Drama is rated TV-PG because it features mild profanity, censored language, brief censored nudity, and some suggestive dialogue. When more suggestive dialogue is present, the episode is rated TV-PG-D. The first three seasons are rated TV-PG-D while the latter two are rated TV-PG. Unlike many other animated shows, this series has a different logo for every season (while each season might have multiple alternate logos), so there is no official logo for this series.

Location

Most seasons in this series takes place in a different location. The first season, Total Drama Island, is set in Camp Wawanakwa, a fictional island located in an unspecified area in Muskoka, Ontario. The second season, Total Drama Action, is set in an abandoned movie studio lot in Toronto, Ontario. In the third season, Total Drama World Tour, the contestants are taken all around the world in the "Total Drama Jumbo Jet", which seems to be structurally unstable. Some of the countries that are visited in the third season include Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The fourth season, Total Drama: Revenge of the Island, is set back at Camp Wawanakwa, but this time the island is radioactive. The first part of the fifth season, Total Drama All-Stars, also takes place on the island,[8] due to the success of the first and fourth seasons. The second part, Total Drama: Pahkitew Island however, takes place on another island called Pahkitew Island after the destruction of Camp Wawanakwa.[7]

Production

Total Drama was developed and produced by Fresh TV and was distributed by Cake Entertainment. The series is funded in part by the Canada Media Fund (formerly the Canadian Television Fund), and the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit.[9] The first season was funded by Xenpohile Media, Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund. The series, primarily targeted at eight- to sixteen-year-olds, was animated at Elliott Animation and directed by Todd Kauffman and Mark Thornton of Neptoon Studios.[10] The creators, Tom McGillis and Jennifer Pertsch, studied what teenagers liked and disliked about reality television shows in the writing process.[11]

McGillis says they used a "countrywide online research project" to determine this demographic's likes.[12] Fresh TV Inc. partners McGillis, Pertsch, Elliott and Irving produced the series.[13] The budget for the first season was $8 million.[14] It was animated in Flash,[10] at Elliott Animation's studio in Toronto.[13]

Every cast and crew member on Total Drama had to sign a confidentiality agreement not to disclose who the winner was.[15] All the characters were designed by Kauffman.[16] An early name for the series was Camp TV when the series first started production in 2006.[17] Camp TV Productions is still labeled in the end credits of every episode, along with the season number in Roman numerals.

This is a list of all the seasons that have aired with the original Canadian air dates shown below along with basic elements for each season. The 100th episode of the whole series aired in Canada on February 27, 2014, with the producers very happy of this milestone.[6] That means that it took Teletoon 6 years and 7 months for them to air the first 100 episodes.

The entire fifth season has already finished airing in the United States and Canada with Mike and Sky as the most recent winners. For the most recent seasons, the United States and other countries usually air the seasons first and before Canada gets to air it (usually the following year).

Seasons

There are currently five seasons in the Total Drama series that have aired worldwide, with new seasons currently in production, which all are listed below. The air dates listed in the table are from the original Canadian airings.

Total Drama Island is the first season of the series. It first premiered on Canada on July 8, 2007 and June 5, 2008 on the United States. This season takes place at Camp Wawanakwa, a fictional island located somewhere in Muskoka, Ontario where the season is based on a summer camp theme (although a contestant is eliminated at the end of every episode). Like the whole series, this season is a competition to see which of the twenty-two contestants will survive and last the longest. This is because the contestants are brutally tortured along the way through the intense challenges they are given. Challenges are sometimes based on other reality shows like Fear Factor and Survivor. All of this is so that the winner of the season (the one to last the longest on the island and not get eliminated), will win a small fortune of C$100,000 and cheesy fame. Eliminated contestants are sent packing toward the Dock of Shame and must ride the Boat of Losers off the island.

Total Drama Action is the second season of the series. It premiered on Canada on January 11, 2009 and June 10 in the U.S. It is a sequel to the first season of the series, Total Drama Island. In this season, fourteen characters from Total Drama Island returned: Beth, Bridgette, DJ, Duncan, Geoff, Gwen, Harold, Heather, Izzy, Justin, Leshawna, Lindsay, Owen, and Trent. Courtney returns later on in the season due to a lawsuit. In this season, the contestants are taken to a brand new location: an old film lot in the center of Toronto, Ontario. The challenges are now based on movie genres, and the grand prize is now C$1,000,000. Cody, Eva, Ezekiel, Noah, Katie, Sadie, and Tyler do not return to compete, but still appeared for the aftermath special, an extra show which was hosted by Bridgette and Geoff, the first two eliminated contestants. All losers must take the Walk of Shame on the red carpet and ride the Lame-o-sine.

Total Drama World Tour is the third season of the series. It premiered in 2010 internationally and continued onto 2011 in Canada. In this season, seventeen contestants are taken on a trip around the world as they compete in cultural themed challenges based on the countries or regions that they visit. An added twist in this season is that the contestants are required to break spontaneously into song, or else be immediately eliminated by Chris (although this rule was not strongly enforced, and no one was eliminated for not singing anyway). Fifteen of the original characters from Total Drama Island returned: Bridgette, Cody, Courtney, DJ, Duncan, Ezekiel, Gwen, Harold, Heather, Izzy, Leshawna, Noah, Lindsay, Owen, and Tyler. Two new characters, Alejandro and Sierra, also joined the cast at the beginning of this season. Additionally, a third new character, Blaineley, was brought on to compete past the halfway point of the season. Beth, Eva, Geoff, Justin, Katie, Sadie, and Trent did not return to compete, but have instead appeared for the aftermath specials. The prize for this season is also C$1,000,000. People are eliminated by jumping off the Drop of Shame.

Total Drama: Revenge of the Island is the fourth season of the series. The series' extension was commissioned by Teletoon from the producers, Fresh TV Inc.[26] It premiered in Canada on January 5, 2012 and in the United States on June 5, 2012. This season returns to Camp Wawanakwa (the original setting of the first season), but no contestants from previous seasons return. Instead, a new set of thirteen contestants compete, which are Anne Maria, B, Brick, Cameron, Dakota, Dawn, Jo, Lightning, Mike, Sam, Scott, Staci, and Zoey.[25] However, some characters from the original cast still have cameo appearances throughout the season.[27] Also, due to the island being abandoned for the past two seasons, Chris had lent the island to a biohazardous waste dump company, causing the island to turn radioactive.[28] This means that causes of radiation and toxic waste is the main theme for this season. This season only contains 13 episodes (half the length of a regular season),[24] and the cash prize is once again C$1,000,000. People are eliminated off the island by the Hurl of Shame.

Total Drama All-Stars and Total Drama: Pahkitew Island both make up the fifth season of the Total Drama series which were ordered by Cartoon Network in October 2012 as 26 episodes.[29] Both parts of Season 5 feature different islands and casts, but share similar elements and are both under the same production code.

Total Drama All-Stars is the first part of the fifth season of the series.[31] While the season premiered on January 9, 2014 in Canada[20] and on September 10, 2013 in the United States.[21] This segment is 13 episodes long, just like the previous season.[32] Total Drama All-Stars features the fourteen most popular contestants from the previous two seasons,[29][33] which are: Alejandro, Cameron, Courtney, Duncan, Gwen, Heather, Jo, Lightning, Lindsay, Mike, Sam, Scott, Sierra, and Zoey.[34] They all compete in several "Heroes vs. Villains" themed challenges, which means that the protagonists (heroes) team up and compete against the antagonists (villains).[35] People will now be eliminated by taking the Flush of Shame and the winner once again takes home C$1,000,000.

Total Drama: Pahkitew Island is the second part of the fifth season and was announced on June 11, 2013.[7] It also consists of 13 episodes and takes place at a new location, this time on an island called Pahkitew Island located somewhere in Western Canada.[7] A new set of fourteen contestants compete in this season, which are: Amy, Beardo, Dave, Ella, Jasmine, Leonard, Max, Rodney, Samey, Scarlett, Shawn, Sky, Sugar, and Topher. The last part of this season first aired in the United States on July 7, 2014 and later in Canada on September 4, 2014.[6][22] Eliminations now take place via the Cannon of Shame and features another one million dollar grand prize. Pahkitew Island features various similar elements to Camp Wawanakwa but the island is much bigger.

Future plans

Although focus on production of the spin-off has delayed any production of future seasons, co-creator Tom McGillis has stated that his personal goal is for Total Drama to go up to ten seasons.[37] Alex Ganetakos, the executive story editor and the senior writer for the series, also says that the production team plans to make more seasons in the future.[38]

However, as of November 2016, no new episodes have been planned, putting the series on hiatus.

Broadcast

Total Drama first premiered in Canada on July 8, 2007 on Teletoon, while the United States aired the show one year later on Cartoon Network on June 5, 2008,[39] followed by several other countries thereafter. Since then, Total Drama has become an international franchise and one of the biggest successes for Fresh TV. As of September 2011, the entire series has been shown in over 100 countries around the world, with the first season airing in 188 countries worldwide.[9]

The series airs on Teletoon in Canada, ABC1, ABC3, and Cartoon Network in Australia, Kix Jetix and Disney XD in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and Cartoon Network in the United States. The fourth season first aired on Télétoon+ and Canal+ Family in France,[41] while the fifth season finished airing first on K2 in Italy.[42] Australia was also the first country to finish airing the third season.

Alternate airings

For every season, the show's producers create two alternate endings for the final episode, such that the winner seen in one country's broadcasts is the runner-up in other countries (and vice versa) where the show airs. Recently however, the winners have been the same for all the new countries the series is being introduced in (like Hungary, South Africa, Slovenia, etc.). The characters, Gwen, Beth, Heather, Lightning, Zoey and Shawn are depicted as the season winners in these versions. Winners in bold are the original winners (the winners that aired in the country and language the series was produced).

After a season is done, the winner usually gets to keeps the money and is able to spend it at the end, except for Total Drama Island where the money is eaten by a shark, and in Total Drama World Tour where the money is thrown into a volcano.

Characters

Total Drama has had a total of 52 characters in the series who were introduced as contestants throughout the series' five seasons. The first three seasons consists of an original set of cast, with a total of 25 characters (22 are introduced in the first episode of the series, while the other three are introduced later on), while the fourth season consists of only a new cast with 13 characters. However, the fifth season brings back both casts to compete together and against each other, while also introducing a third set of cast with 14 new characters.

Shawn is the most recent winner as of July 2014, while previous winners who competed again after their win are no longer capable of winning due to their unfortunate events. 22 characters competed in Season 1, 15 competed in Season 2, 18 competed in Season 3, 13 competed in Season 4, and 14 characters competed in each half of Season 5 (28 total).

Voice actors

There are several voice actors who have recorded the voices for all the characters in the Total Drama series. Both Christian Potenza and Clé Bennett voice the two main characters in the series, who appear in almost every episode.[45] Christian Potenza plays the role of egotistical and unapathetic host Chris McLean, saying that the best part of the job was that his character could not be voted off the show.[46] Clé Bennett plays the role of the co-host of the series Chef. Other notable voice actors include Brian Froud, who voices contestants Harold and Sam, and is the only other voice actor who has a main role in every season. Emilie-Claire Barlow plays the contestant Courtney on Total Drama Island and stated that Courtney was her favorite character that she had ever played.[47]

Most voice actors have only voiced one character, while some actors have voiced two characters. Peter Oldring and Clé Bennett are the only two voice actors who have voiced more than two characters, Oldring voicing three and Bennett voicing four (five if counting DJ's mother). Brian Froud, Rochelle Wilson and Bennett are the only voice actors to voice contestants from more than one generation. Claire-Barlow revealed that Courtney was voiced by an unnamed voice actress, later revealed to be Rochelle Wilson in the first two episodes of Total Drama Island before the role was given to her. Alejandro is the only character to have three voice actors; he was voiced by Marco Grazinni in Total Drama World Tour, Keith Oliver while he was in the robot suit and Alex House in Total Drama All-Stars.[59] Josh is the only minor character to have a voice actor of his own, Dwayne Hill, as these roles are usually given to one of the main cast members.

Total Drama characters are seen in an entire different series called Skatoony where the characters are interviewed to play in quiz trivia games against real people and other Canadian series characters. Geoff, Leonard, Noah, and Owen also appear in Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race as contestants.[5]

Series reception

Ratings

As of 2011, the first season has been shown in over 188 countries[9] while the entire franchise has been seen in at least 100.[60] The series has received incredible ratings, ranking #1 for the under-14 age group base throughout the series airing period on Cartoon Network.[61] The series also has very involved fans who keep talking about the series throughout various online communities, while also inspiring them to create their own fanart and fanfictions.[6] Cake Entertainment, the main distributor of the series, calls the show "phenomenally popular",[60] while the creator of the series said that "For tweens around the world, Total Drama is more than just a parody of a reality show. It's THEIR reality show".[6]

Critical reaction

The first season, Total Drama Island received general acclaim from critics and fans. Users from TV.com gave the show an 8.6 "Great",[62] while users from IMDB gave it a 7.5 out of 10.[63] Common Sense Media gave the show 4 out of 5 stars, calling it a "[c]lever cartoon reality show spoof".[64]

The second season, Total Drama Action, received less acclaim due to being seen as less on par with Total Drama Island; a primary criticism was the selection of contestants from Island who had already made it far in that season, thus neglecting most of the contestants who were eliminated earlier. Action currently holds a 7.9 on Metacritic based on 14 reviews.[65]

The third season, Total Drama World Tour, has also received critical acclaim from critics and won multiple awards including "Best Animated Series", "Best Voice Actress" (for Annick Obonsawin), and was also nominated for several other awards; however, the criticisms included the overuse of the love triangle between Courtney, Duncan, and Gwen, as well as the destruction of the character Ezekiel.

Total Drama: Revenge of the Island received mixed to positive reviews, airing in over 100 countries and holding a 6.7 on Metacritic based on 15 reviews, thus indicating "Generally favorable reviews."[66]

Total Drama All-Stars has received mixed to negative reviews, with the primary criticisms being the neglecting of original favorites in favor of the Revenge of the Island cast, and many wasted plot lines such as building up a reconciliation between Courtney and Gwen, only to have it be ruined again. All-Stars currently holds a 5.4 rating on Metacritic based on 9 reviews.[67] Total Drama Pahkitew Island, however, has received significant critical acclaim, primarily due to its diverse cast and more realistic tone that matched the feel of the original season.

Up until November 1, 2011, only Total Drama Island had been released on DVD. Cartoon Network released their Total Drama Island DVD in the U.S. on August 18, 2009 (Region 1), while Madman Entertainment (Region 4) also released Total Drama Island on DVD in Australia, but this time in two parts (Collection 1 on May 5, 2010[72] and Collection 2 on September 29, 2010[73]). However, almost two years after Total Drama Action was first aired, Madman released their Collection 1 DVD of the second season on November 2, 2011[74][75] (with Collection 2 being released on July 4, 2012[76]), making Australia the only country that has released the entirety of Total Drama Action for private home viewing. Australia also released Total Drama World Tour on DVD with Collection 1 being released on April 3, 2013[77] and Collection 2 being released on August 7, 2013.[78] On October 8, 2014 Total Drama: Revenge of the Island was released into one part due to it being a shorter season. The first part of the fifth season, Total Drama All-Stars was released on March 4, 2015 with the second part, Total Drama: Pahkitew Island being released on July 8, 2015.[80]

Online promotion

Teletoon hosted a Total Drama-based website called "Total Drama Online" from 2009 to 2013 where players could play games and earn badges to win prizes.[82] Even though most features (like user accounts, original avatar designer and badge counter) from this website are exclusive to only Canadian viewers, all of the games and basic elements were available to the rest of the world. Cartoon Network also had their own Total Drama website from 2009 to 2015 which was very similar to the Canadian one,[83] but was only exclusive to viewers in the United States. Various alternate websites based on the series also exist throughout most of the other countries the show airs in, which are all in their respective languages.[84]

Spin-off series

A new spin-off series called Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race was created by Fresh TV which takes place in the same universe as the current show.[85] The new series is loosely based off after the format of the The Amazing Race where the cast are split into multiple teams of two (referred to as duos) which race around the world throughout the series. There is a new host this series called Don, who replaced the original host Chris.[86] Even though some of the characters from the main series make appearances, the spin-off series is primarily dominated by a new cast.[5] The spin-off series is a "buddy comedy" and includes 18 pairs of teams (36 characters). It first premiered on September 7, 2015 on Cartoon Network and later premiered on January 4, 2016 on the Canadian version of Cartoon Network.[87]
