Tyner Middle Academy is a middle-school (grades 6-8) located at 6837 Tyner Road in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The school's building has been used for over 100 years and was originally erected in 1907 as Tyner High School (now known as Tyner Academy). This was the first secondary school to open in Hamilton County, Tennessee, east of Missionary Ridge, and running water and electricity were not provided to the school until the 1920s. Tyner High School relocated directly across the street into a new building during 1937. Tyner Middle Academy would subsequently open to students in 1959 in the original school building.[2]

Historical notes on the school building

According to the Hamilton County Genealogical Society Website, the citizens of Tyner congregated at the new school in November 1907 to dedicate the building. The original request for a new high school in Tyner was made by W. H. Varnell and the land for the school was purchased for $250 from J. R. Smith.[3]

Administration

Tyner Middle Academy is currently under the leadership of Principal Crystal Sorrells and Assistant Principal Travis Miller.[4]

Extracurricular activities

Tyner Middle Academy offers students the opportunity to participate in basketball, football, soccer, volleyball, and wrestling. The school has received widespread attention for its robotics program -"TyBots".[5] The school is also home to the STEM club "TyTech", a biology and physical sciences after-school program led by Mr. A. Goad.

Project Inspire

Tyner Middle Academy is one of three schools in Hamilton County, Tennessee that hosts teacher residents through the 15-month residency program, Project Inspire. Currently, Tyner Middle Academy hosts two math and four science teacher residents. Under the supervision of a veteran teacher (Clinical Instructor), teacher residents develop their lesson planning, classroom management, and STEM education skills at Tyner Middle Academy (Monday through Thursday). On Friday's, teacher residents attend a weekly seminar where they collaborate with program coaches and fellow residents. Additionally, Project Inspire teacher residents work towards their master's degrees in Curriculum and Instruction through Tennessee Technological University.[6]
