Tyrone Benjamin Barnett is an English professional footballer who plays as a forward for AFC Wimbledon.

A former West Bromwich Albion trainee, he played non-league football until joining Macclesfield Town in 2010. After a season there he transferred to Crawley Town, where he played for half a campaign before a loan move to Peterborough United which was then made permanent for £1.1 million. Barnett was loaned out several times before joining Shrewsbury Town for around £100,000 in February 2015.

Career

Non-league

Barnett began his career as a youth player with West Bromwich Albion but was eventually released by the club after not being offered a professional contract.[2] He instead moved to Rushall Olympic, making his league debut at the age of 19 in a 3–1 defeat to Clevedon Town.[3] His form at the start of the 2006–07 season, scoring 9 goals in 16 appearances in all competitions,[4] led A.F.C. Telford United to sign Barnett in October 2006 in exchange for Dean Perrow joining Rushall on a one-month loan deal.[5] However, he fell out of favour at the club and left to join Willenhall Town at the end of the season.

He spent one season with Willenhall, finishing as the club's top scorer with 22 goals,[6] before joining Hednesford Town. He scored 28 goals in all competitions during his first season, helping the club win the Birmingham Senior Cup for the first time in 73 years with a 2–0 win over Stourbridge.[7]

Macclesfield Town

In May 2010, he moved to Football League Two side Macclesfield Town, joining former Hednesford team mate Ross Draper at the club.[8] He made a goalscoring debut on the opening day of the 2010–11 season in a 2–2 draw with Stevenage.[9] He initially signed a one-year deal but was quickly offered a further year after a successful start to his League career. By 23 April 2011 Barnett had scored 13 League goals, to become the equal fifth highest scorer in a Football League season for Macclesfield Town. Barnett was voted by Macclesfield Town supporters their Player of the Year for 2010–11.

Crawley Town

Barnett signed for newly promoted League Two side Crawley Town for an undisclosed fee on 29 June 2011. He scored their first ever football league goal on 6 August 2011, opening the scoring in the 2–2 draw with Port Vale. After August, Barnett (along with manager Steve Evans) were nominated for Player of the Month for August and League Two Manager of the Month for August respectively for Crawley Town but lost to Andy Scott for League Two Manager of the Month for August and Mark Arber for Player of the Month for August.[10] Barnett also scored his first brace for the club against Bradford on 16 September.[11] After scoring twice against Bradford City, Barnett has been attracted interests from clubs who want to sign him.[12] Since then, Barnett formed a striking partnership with Matt Tubbs until his departure to Bournemouth. Barnett went on to score 13 goals for Crawley Town.

Due to his goalscoring form and good performance for Crawley Town, Barnett (along with Kyle McFadzean and Matt Tubbs) all being linked with clubs from the Premier League and Championship. Blackpool had a bid accepted for Barnett[13] but the move fell through over personal terms.[14] Despite leaving Crawley Town, Barnett was nominated for the League Two player of the year on 22 February 2012,[15] but lost out to Matt Ritchie.[16]

Peterborough United

2011–12 season

On 21 February 2012, Barnett signed on an emergency loan deal for Championship side Peterborough United, with a permanent move worth £1.1 million agreed for the start of summer transfer window.[17] He came off the bench to score on his debut in a 1–1 draw against Doncaster Rovers.[18] After the match, manager Darren Ferguson described Barnett's goalscoring debut as one of the best he has witnessed.[19] Two weeks later, on 10 March 2012, Barnett had scored three goals in three consecutive matches, bringing his tally to four. At the end of the 2011–12 season, Barnett joined Peterborough United on a permanent basis.[20]

2012–13 season

In the 2012–13 season, Barnett was given a number nine shirt, which was last worn by David Ball.[21] Newspaper Peterborough Evening Telegraph predicted that Barnett would score fifteen goals in the 2012–13 season.[22] But the start of the season wasn't a great start for him, as he suffered a hamstring problem,[23] meaning he missed the first three matches. After his return against Birmingham City,[24] Barnett made a reckless challenge on Greg Cunningham during a 2–1 loss against Bristol City, which resulted in Cunningham being stretchered off; Barnett was booked instead rather than receiving a red card. After the match, Derek McInnes stated that Barnett should have been sent off for what he did to Cunningham.[25] Then, he scored his first goal of the 2012–13 Championship campaign when he scored a header against Barnsley, ending five games without scoring.[26]

A month later on 12 November 2012, Barnett was transfer-listed following a breach of club discipline, along with three other players.[27] Shortly after being transfer-listed, he joined Ipswich Town on loan until January 2013 a week later.[28] But after three appearances, Barnett's loan spell ended when he suffered a knee injury during training on 13 December 2012.[29]

After returning on loan from Ipswich Town, Barnett continued to be left out of the Peterborough squad due to injury, but by mid-February manager Ferguson had forgiven Barnett and could allow him to make a return in the first team.[30] Barnett found himself playing a smaller role in the first team, spending time on the bench in several games. Peterborough were relegated from the Championship to League One at the end of the 2012–13 season, and Barnett was placed on the transfer list by the club, along with four players, ahead of the 2013–14 season.[31]

2013–14 season

Having not yet signed for a new club at the start of the 2013–14 season, Barnett played his first start in over six months in the opening game of the season, in a 1–0 win over Swindon Town.[32] Then, in the first round of the League Cup, Barnett scored his first goal in over ten months, in a 5–1 win over Colchester United, three days later.[33] Since scoring his first goal of the season, Barnett started adding six league goals to his tally against Notts County,[34] Tranmere Rovers,[35] Crewe,[36] Bristol City,[37] Preston[38] and Port Vale.[39]

On 8 January 2014, Barnett joined fellow League One side Bristol City on loan for the remainder of the 2013–14 season.[40] He scored his first goal for the club on 11 February, in a 3–1 win against Leyton Orient.[41] Having made seventeen appearance, it announced that Barnett made his return back to Peterborough United.[42] Upon returning to Peterborough United, Barnett was told by the club to find a new club, as the club's policy for their last year of their contract.[43]

2014–15 season

On 10 September 2014, Barnett joined League Two side Oxford United on loan for 93 days.[44] He made his debut three days later, starting in a 1–1 draw away to Exeter City,[45] and three days after that he scored his first goal for the team in a 3–1 win over Accrington Stanley at the Kassam Stadium.[46] On 4 October, Barnett was sent off for two bookings in Oxford's 1–0 home win against Newport County.[47] Two weeks later after returning from injury, he opened a 2–0 home win against Tranmere Rovers.[48] In his last three games for Oxford, Barnett scored four times, including a five-minute brace on 6 December as the team drew 2–2 with Tranmere in the second round of the FA Cup.[49]

Shrewsbury Town

Barnett joined Shrewsbury Town on a two-and-a-half-year contract on 2 February 2015, for an undisclosed fee understood to be around £100,000.[50] He made his debut five days later, replacing Mikael Mandron in the 57th minute and netting in the 85th to rescue a point in a 1–1 home draw against Southend United, thus preserving Shrewsbury's unbeaten home run.[51] After seven subsequent games without a goal, he concluded Town's 4–1 away win over Morecambe on 17 March after coming on as a substitute for Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro with five minutes to play.[52] On 6 April, after replacing Akpa-Akpro at half time, Barnett scored the only goal of the game to defeat Mansfield Town at Field Mill, connecting to Mark Ellis' cross in the 50th minute.[53] Five days later, as a late substitute again for Akpa-Akpro, he hit an added-time half volley to conclude a 4–0 home win over Exeter City.[54]

Barnett fell out of favour at Shrewsbury following their promotion to League One, and he was allowed to join divisional rivals Southend United on loan until the end of the season in January 2016.[55] He scored on his Southend debut in a 4–2 defeat against Swindon Town, [56] and found the net four more times during his loan spell as Southend finished the season in mid-table. Despite declaring that he saw his future away from Shrewsbury Town,[57] he returned to his parent club the following pre-season, scoring in a behind closed doors friendly match against Wolverhampton Wanderers in July 2016.[58] His contract was cancelled by mutual consent on 1 August 2016, despite having a year left to run.[59]

AFC Wimbledon

Barnett signed for AFC Wimbledon on 3 August 2016.[60] Barnett scored his first goal for the club in a 2–1 win against Charlton Athletic on 17 September 2016.[61]
