Vermont will be a Virginia-class submarine, commemorating the history between the U.S. state of Vermont and the United States Navy. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced its name on September 18, 2014.[4]

The U.S. Navy awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat the contract to construct 10 Block IV Virginia-class submarines for $17.6 billion on April 28, 2014. Vermont commenced in May 2014 with the 10th ship scheduled for delivery in 2023.[2]
