Universidad Mayor is a private university in Santiago, Chile. It was founded in 1988 with a scientific-technological pioneering approach to higher education with the mission and vision to provide and maintain high quality education and excellence to undergraduate and graduate students, harness an entrepreneurial attitude, innovation, leadership, international insertion and respect for cultural diversity by contributing to society while abiding to scientific, cultural, educational, social and economic norms.

Foundation, Growth and Development (1988-2015)

Universidad Mayor’s first two academic programs in 1988 where Architecture and Engineering with 3 majors; Industrial Engineering, Computer Science and Electronics Engineering.

A few years later, Universidad Mayor became the first Chilean private educational institution to offer Agronomy, Forest Engineering, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry.

In 1998, the School of Medicine was founded and afterwards, new degree programs were added in Phonoaudiology, Psychology and Kinesiology.

Universidad Mayor was also the first private university to open a regional campus in Chile.

During 2013 - 2014, the university deepened its research activity development by creating the Center of Genomics and Bioinformatics which operates in cooperation with the School of Science by offering the first and only PhD program in Integrative Genomics in Chile.

Today, Universidad Mayor is an established educational institution offering 64 Baccalaureate and over 170 graduate programs including Master and Doctoral degrees as well as non-degree programs such as diplomas, certificates, licenses, courses and online learning in regular academic and continuing education throughout 11 campuses with state of the art facilities, clinics, hospital affiliations and over 100 modern laboratories for students and faculty.

Modernization and Restructuring (2016)

After 27 years of sustainable growth Universidad Mayor’s Board of Trustees presented a new academic and management structure in January 2016, with the objective of aligning its academic and administrative organization with the development strategy to strengthen the capability to face challenges of society in both the national and global context, following a similar transformation plan successfully implemented by Princeton University and The University of Edinburgh.

Universidad Mayor offers bachelor, master and doctoral degrees as well as non-degree programs in into 3 main schools plus a Music Conservatory:

The university is organized into 12 different locations, with 11 campuses in Santiago and 1 in Temuco

Rankings and Faculty

Universidad Mayor ranks among the top 20 schools in Chile according to América Economía 2015 and within the top +201-250 in Latin America as per QS Top Universities Worldwide rankings.

The faculty at Universidad Mayor includes alumni from University of Chile, Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, University of Santiago, University of Concepción and Federico Santa María Technical University among others.

National and International Accreditation

Universidad Mayor is fully accredited in Chile by the National Accreditation Commission (CNA) in Institutional Management and Undergraduate Faculty.

It is also the first university in Chile to be internationally accredited by the United States Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) which defines, maintains, and promotes educational excellence across institutions and is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education to conduct accreditation and pre-accreditation activities for institutions of higher education in DE, DC, MD, NJ, NY, PA, PR, and the US Virgin Islands.

The MSCHE accreditation places Universidad Mayor in a select group of worldwide accredited international universities which include top US schools such as Columbia University, Cornell University, George Washington University, New York University, University of Pennsylvania and University of Pittsburgh.

Office of International Relations

Universidad Mayor's has an Office of International Relations to design and manage global foreign policy and initiatives through exchange strategies and programs to promote the participation of students and faculty in universities abroad which allow them to carry out research and specialization activities in their fields of expertise as well as to foster global intercultural exchange in academia and technology.

Currently, Universidad Mayor has 313 agreements with universities and institutions in 49 countries worldwide, including Argentina, Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, South Korea, Sweden, Spain, Poland, Turkey and the United States.

The Office of International Relations also provides students with the opportunity to take English, French, German and Chinese language courses through special agreements with the British and French Cultural Institutes, the Goethe Institute, the Heidelberg Center for Latin America and the Confucio Center.

Sports

Universidad Mayor features soccer, hockey, volleyball, tennis, chess, table tennis, taekwondo, dance and basketball teams, competing within higher education leagues and championships.[1]
