University of Economics in Bratislava (Slovak: Ekonomická univerzita v Bratislave) is the oldest university of economics in Slovakia.
About University
The University of Economics in Bratislava (UEBA) is nowadays considered one of the most important educational and scientific-research institutions in the Slovak Republic. The UEBA is a public Higher Education Institution focusing on Economics, Business, and Management. It provides higher education in Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programmes for full-time and part-time students. On the basis of the comprehensive accreditation of Higher Education Institutions in the Slovak Republic, which took place in the years 2008-2009 in compliance with the Act on Higher Education, the UEBA was included in the highest category of HEIs in the Slovak Republic, among “Higher Education Institutions of University Type”.
The University is located in Bratislava, the capital and largest city of the Slovak Republic.

History
The beginnings of the school date back to October 1940, when chambers of commerce and industry in the towns of Bratislava, Banská Bystrica, and Prešov established a "College of Commerce" (VOŠ in Slovak) which was given the status of a public school by the Government.
The need to establish a higher educational institution in Slovakia aimed at economics was called for owing to the fact that in 1939 some Czech higher educational institutions were closed, among them the College of Commerce in Prague, in which also Slovak students received economic qualification. The College of Commerce in Bratislava used that name till the end of the academic year 1944/1945. By the Decree of the Slovak National Council No. 34/1945, the school was nationalised and its name was changed to the Slovak College of Commerce. In 1949, it was renamed the College of Economic Sciences. The Governmental Decree No. 40/1952 altered its name to the College of Economics. The Act No. 292/1992 of 28 April 1992 changed the school's name again to the University of Economics in Bratislava.The beginnings of our school are connected with the names of some outstanding personalities, such as Prof. Dr. Juraj Hronec, Prof. Július Pázman, Prof. Vladimír Králiček, Prof. Dr. Ladislav Cicvárek. It was these mentioned enthusiasts who laid the foundations of learning in the field of economics in Slovakia. The College of Economics began its performance without premises of its own. The teaching process began in rented locations in various locations in Bratislava. Backed by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Bratislava, it managed to buy two buildings for the College of Commerce in Palisády Street.
Regarding premises, considerable improvements came in 1960, when the College of Economics moved to a new building belonging to Comenius University in Odbojárov Street. However, some workplaces stayed in the previous school premises in Palisády Street and Konventná Street. Nevertheless, the situation with premises continued being the number one problem, as the school had to make various changes in placing its workplacesʼ or to build new premises on the campus in Odbojárov St.
The unsatisfactory situation mentioned was to be solved by building a new campus for the College of Economics in Bratislava – Petržalka, in Dolnozemská cesta.The aim was to meet all the demands made on the teaching process, research, accommodation and catering. The construction of the complex began in 1983. The first building called Teaching 1ʼ was opened in 1991. The Faculty of National Economy and the Faculty of Commerce moved there. The building called Teaching 2ʼ was opened in 1996 and conatined the Faculties of Business Informatics, Business Management, International Relations, the rectorate, and other workplaces.
Since its beginnings, the University of Economics in Bratislava has educated over 77,000 graduates for the needs of economic sciences development, for work in the economy and in public administration. They work in all fields of the national economy, at all levels of economic management, and many of them represent our country abroad in various positions.
At present, over 12,000 students are studying in seven UEBA faculties in various types of study. Many of them have won foreign scholarshipsʼ which is indicative of the high level of schooling at the University. Graduate is an economist who has mastered general economic theory, has acquired knowledge in national economy policy, corporate economy, management, marketing, finance, quantitative methods in economics, information sciences, law, and other subjects used in economic activity, and who can communicate in at least two world languages. Upon joining a company, he/she an adaptable and a flexible person who adopts the demanded working habits and applies new knowledge. Since 1990, the Statutes of the UEBA have been the basic document of the University's performance and of its legal status. They were replaced in 1996, when an updated Higher Education Act was accepted. According to the Statutes, the aim of the UEBA is to provide university education, and to develop knowledge on the basis of creative research in the branches of economics, humanities and social sciences.
The University's supreme autonomous body is the Academic Senate. It comprises elected representatives of the academic community who report to the community. In the academic community of the UEBA which elects the Academic Senate there are teachers, researchers, specialists with a university degree, and students. The academic body named the Research Board is headed by the rector as its chairperson. The tasks and powers of the Academic Board are laid down in the Statutes of the UEBA. The Rector is the University's highest representative, as well as its statutory deputy.

Education Choice
The UEBA strategic aim in the area of education is to provide high quality study programmes comparable with renowned universities throughout the world.
Consequently, the University pays close attention to the content and quality of its study programmes and it strives to establish and develop partnerships with prestigious international universities in order to prepare and deliver international double degree programmes and/or joint programmes. The UEBA provides university education at all three levels of study in compliance with the Bologna Process:
- The 1st level of study lasts 3 years and is completed by a final Bachelor's thesis and state examination. The graduates are awarded a bachelor's degree (abbreviation "Bc.").
- The 2nd level of study lasts 2 years and is completed by a Diploma thesis and state examination. The graduates are awarded a Masters's degree (abbreviation "Ing"/"Mgr.").
- The 3rd level of study – PhD. study lasts 3 years in the full-time form and 5 years in the part-time form. It consists of two parts – a taught part lasting 1.5 years and research part lasting 1.5 years for full - time and 3.5 years for part - time studies. The first part of the study is concluded with the dissertation examination, the study programme is completed by the defence of a dissertation thesis. Graduates are awarded the academic degree "Philosophiae doctor" (abbreviation "PhD."). Although the language of instruction in UEBA doctoral programmes is Slovak, English plays an important role in the programmes' delivery.
Postgraduate educational programmes
Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme in English language. The programme started in the academic year 2010/2011, in cooperation with the Franklin University, Ohio, USA, which is known for the high quality of distance on-line study and development of cooperation in the CEE region, in China and India. General Management Programme (GMP) in Slovak and in English language, in cooperation with ESCP Europe Business School accredited for ACCSB, EQUIS and AMBA. GMP is the first step in acquisition of the prestigious European Executive MBA programme.

The UEBA offers exclusively programmes accredited at national level by the Accreditation Commission, which is a counselling body of the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic. Quality of the delivery of study programmes is continuously monitored and evaluated according to the rules set up by the internal quality monitoring system
International Relations
The University of Economics in Bratislava strives to be seen as a prestigious international university in the fields of Economics, Business, Finance and Management. UEBA’s long–term ambition is to prepare graduates who can build their successful future domestic and international careers on the thorough knowledge acquired during their studies at UEBA. In consequence the University promotes internationalisation of education and of other activities. It also fosters effective relationships with renowned universities, institutions and businesses from abroad.
As a result, the internationalisation and the development of international partnerships with universities, enterprises, and other institutions throughout the world belong among the priorities of the University.
The UEBA also actively participates in the mobility CEEPUS programme. The activity is organized each academic year by a network of universities from countries from Central and Eastern Europe: Vienna University of Economics and Business; the University of Economics, Prague; Corvinus University, Budapest; the University of Belgrade; the University of Zagreb; the University of Bucharest and the University of Economics, Kiev.
The UEBA coopeerates with its international partners mainly on the basis of Erasmus agreements with Universities form Austra, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Malta, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom (230 agreements from 30 countries) and of other types of framework agreements on cooperation.
The UEBA cooperates within the European Union on the basis of Bilateral agreements with Universities from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France, Holland, Lithuania, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Italy and Great Britain (36 contracts).
Outside the European Union UEBA cooperates with Universities from Algeria, Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, Croatia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, the Russian Federation, Serbia, Syria, Ukraine and the USA (29 current contracts).
The number of incoming and outgoing students within mobility programmes has been constantly increasing. UEBA belongs to the most successful Higher Education Institutions in the Slovak Republic with regard to the number of its students sent for study periods and practical placement abroad UEBA was included twice in the “ERASMUS Success Stories”published by the European Commission (2008, 2009)

Terms and Conditions of Admission for Foreign Exchange (Incoming) Students for Study-Stays at the University of Economics in Bratislava
The University of Economics in Bratislava (hereinafter “UEBA”) annually welcomes foreign students to its academic premises within the framework of bi-lateral agreements for one or two-semester study-stays within the framework of the Erasmus Programme, the CEEPUS Programme, the National Scholarship Programme, the International Visegrad Fund, inter-governmental agreements and framework agreements with foreign universities.
The admission of foreign students for study-stays at the UEBA is handled by The Foreign Relations Office, the Coordinator for Incoming Foreign Students, which is responsible for the entire coordination of/communication with students starting from the process of their acceptance until their departure from the university.
Scientific journals
An integral part of the university's research activities is support for the presentation of research results in various forms. One element is the support of scientific and technical periodicals at the University and its various faculties.
There is a longe history of publishing a scientific journal: the university-wide Ekonomické rozhľady / Economic Review, since 1968. The editorial board of the magazine is composed of major scientific personalities from Slovakia and abroad.
The University has a long tradition of issuing faculty and scientific journals that are published in printed or electronic form. Scientific journals of individual faculties of the University of Economics in Bratislava publish the theoretical and practical knowledge’ the output of basic and applied economic research and practice, forming the thematic focus of the magazine. The aim and ambition of the editors of several scientific journals, published in Economics in Bratislava’ is to become part of the citation, bibliographic and full-text database expertise.

Research and Doctoral Studies
UEBA is one of the largest centres of basic and applied research in economics, management and business in Slovakia. A broad spectrum of research themes is undertaken with special emphasis on transition economics, knowledge economy, European economics and business, This is strong research potential in terms of qualified academic staff and established research networks, It is active in organization of international research events, conferences, seminars and workshops, UEBA Publishes of refereed academic journals
UEBA research activities include basic research, applied research and research related to the needs of the teaching process (e.g. the design and innovation of teaching methodology, analysis of its effectiveness, development of case studies, etc.). UEBA is the largest university type centre of basic and applied research in economics, management and business studies in Slovakia. Thus, the spectrum of research themes is broad with policy-relevant impact. Applied research of UEBA researchers is carried out in close cooperation with the business sector, a large part of it being carried out on contractual basis. The dominant research areas of UEBA are in the following issues: the knowledge economy, innovation, sources of economic growth and competitiveness; globalization, financial markets and international business; employment and labour market rigidities, social security systems; economics of governance and financial markets regulation.
Research activities at UEBA are implemented in compliance with the Act on Institutions of Higher Education of the Slovak Republic and lead to the pursuit of original scientific research through the development and dissemination of knowledge and other related activities. UEBA provides good research infrastructure for its researchers including access to up-to date software packages, electronic databases and library resources. Over 80% of academic staff of the University are professors, associate professors and senior lecturers with a PhD degree.
A large part of UEBA research is funded by research grants from national and international research agencies. Doctoral students are involved in research activities via their dissertation research, which is as a rule related to the research carried out at the department, in which they are supervised.
Research outcomes of UEBA researchers are presented in refereed journals, at international research conferences, seminars and workshops. There are several refereed journals published at UEBA, which are used as a platform for presentation and discussion of research results. Work in progress is presented at conferences and research workshops. Annually, UEBA hosts numerous visiting researchers, who give lectures, present their research and cooperate with UEBA researchers on common research projects and papers.
