Valentines High School (VHS) is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in the Ilford area of the London Borough of Redbridge, England. Current headteacher was initially acting head teacher as this role was left open due to the retirment of Mrs laws, the previous head teacher.

History

The school was formerly a grammar school known as Ilford County High School For Girls. In 1977, the school joined with Gearies Secondary Modern School for Girls to become Valentines High School, a mixed comprehensive school. This mixed school is multicultural and a very high achieving and expecting school.

Status

GCSE results

In 2009, the school had a 73% A*-C pass rate at GCSE level, which is above the national average of 65.5%. Valentines has consistently had GCSE pass rates above the national average from 2006 -2009. In 2009, Valentines was ranked 7th in the borough for students attaining 5 A*-C grades. Excluding independent and faith schools in the area, Valentines was ranked 3rd.[4] Valentines was graded outstanding in every section for its OFSTED report in 2006.[5]

Sixth Form facilities and results

In September 2007, a new sixth form was opened with state-of-the-art physical education facilities including a new astro-turf pitch and tennis courts, a gym and sports hall, a drama studio, newly equipped music room and brand new or newly refurbished areas for Modern Languages, English and Humanities.

In 2008 the school had an A level average point score of 764.1, placing it 6th out of the 18 schools in the borough, however when the selective and independent schools are removed, Valentines is ranked 3rd. This is thought to be largely due to the fact that the AS students are expelled if they do not perform desirably hence leaving behind the most able students which improves their overall statistics. In 2016, approximately 50% of their students were withdrawn from A2.[6]

In 2009, 100% of year 13 students passed their A-Levels, with 75% gaining A-C grades.[5] The pass rate at A-Level is 100%[2] and over 90% of Year 13s go on to university.[7]

In terms of value added, Valentines is in the top 5% of post 16 learners in London.[2]

Attendance rates are very high, with a 92% attendance rate for year 12s in 2009.[5]
