WREO-FM (97.1 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a Hot Adult Contemporary format. Licensed to Ashtabula, Ohio, USA, it serves Northeast Ohio & Northwest Pennsylvania, along with regional coverage into a portion of Western New York & Southern Ontario, Canada. The station is currently owned by Media One Group, LLC which also owns & operates a cluster of radio stations in Jamestown, New York.
For many years, WREO broadcast an Easy Listening / Beautiful Music (aka "Elevator Music") format, which during a period of time in the 1970s was rated #1 in Erie, Pennsylvania. WREO tried a Light Jazz approach in the early 1990s, then switched to Adult Contemporary in the spring of 1992. At that time, the station identified itself as "Star 97.1" but retained the historic WREO call letters.
In the Summer of 2013, WREO joined the growing trend of other Adult Contemporary stations in the country & upgraded to a more modern "Hot Adult Contemporary" (Hot AC) music format...adopting the moniker "Mix 97.1"
Once boasted as the "Powerhouse Of The North Coast", the station's impressive 50,000 watt regional signal allows listeners to enjoy WREO "Mix 97.1" from London, Ontario; West to Cleveland, Ohio; all of Erie, Pennsylvania; East to Ripley, New York; South to Warren & Youngstown, Ohio & all points in between. WREO "Mix 97.1" has a significant daily commuter audience, traveling East & West on I-90 in Ohio & Pennsylvania...Route's 20 & 2 along the Lake Erie Shoreline...North & South on I-79 in Pennsylvania & I-271 in Ohio...plus Ohio Route's 7, 193, 11, 46, 45, 534, 44 & 91.
