Chris White, best known by his DJ name Whiiite, is an American DJ and producer based in Los Angeles. Known for blending genres such as trap and progressive house, since 2010 he has remixed songs for labels such as Dim Mak, Island, Ultra, and Warner Dance. In 2011, he did an official remix of Skylar Grey's song "Invisible" for Interscope. He has released several EPs since 2012 on Vicious Bitch Records, with graphic novels about his "Chris Whiiite" persona accompanying each release. Wrote EDM publication Magnetic Magazine about his 2013 EP The Beekeeper, "rolling snares and booming bass outline epic battles, while dark horns and sinister synths score [the associated graphic novel]."[1] Whiiite also runs the Control parties held at The Avalon in Los Angeles.[2]
Biography
Chris White first became active in the music industry around 2006, while living in Los Angeles.[2] Originally an avid collector of vinyl, he began DJing 3 or 4 times a week, and soon began producing the LA Control parties at The Avalon in Los Angeles. This led to him producing his own music as Whiiite,[2] incorporating genres such as trap into his sets, as well as other house and techno elements.[3]
The Birth Of Whiiite (Audio / Visual) |
He soon debuted a series of graphic novels featuring his persona "Whiiite," a superhero DJ kidnapped and experimented on by scientists.[4] According to Whiiite, "studying film a bit in college I focused mainly on story and screenwriting… so once I moved into music I didn’t want to leave that part of my life completely behind so we incorporated into the project. The music is inspired by the story and the story is written back to the music."[4]
Starting around 2012 he began releasing an annual Halloween-themed mixtape of remixes.[5] In October 2013 he released The Beekeeper EP with five tracks. The EP was accompanied by another issue of Whiiite's comic series, with the EP providing the "soundtrack" to the Beekeeper villain's origin story. According to the EDM publication Magnetic Magazine, the EP is trap-inspired and includes "rolling snares and booming bass outline epic battles, while dark horns and sinister synths score Robinson Burrus’s deranged transformation into the Beekeeper."[1] Later that month he also released the Halloween-themed Nightmares EP.
In October 2014 he released the free mix tape Whiiite Presents Halloween Volume 3, which included remixes by a number of producers in various electronic genres. According to YourEDM, "there is excellent variety on this collection of tracks, everything from Alice Cooper to the Jaws Theme."[6] On December 1, 2014, Magnetic Magazine interviewed Whiiite as part of their "Industry Focus" series, highlighting his involvement with the Control nightclub in Los Angeles.[2] As of 2014 Whiiite continued to run the Project and Avalon Control series of dances.[2]
Wrote Earmilk about Whiiite's January 2015 remix of "Only" by Nicki Minaj, "hollow percussion fills the broad drops, melding with all four superstars' vocals and the now infamous metronome melody, Whiiite crafts a remix that will delight fans of the original and trap fiends alike."[3] He released his EP Monstiiir' in February 2015, premiering the two tracks on the website Bloody-Disgusting.[4]
