William Henry Spencer (doctor)
William Henry Spencer (December 20, 1878–1936) was a prominent early 20th century physician and surgeon in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Spencer was born in Benton, Iowa in 1878 to George Coggswell Spencer and Wilhemina Mary (Knutz) Spencer. His grandfather was Abner Nutting Spencer, founder of Spencers Grove, Iowa.[1]
He was educated at Tilford Collegiate Academy in Vinton, Iowa, and graduated from the Illinois College of Physicians and Surgeons Chicago, now the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1904.[2] He was a member of the Phi Beta Pi medical fraternity. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F., the A.F.A.M., Shrine, and K.P.[3]
He married Bertha Ida Wenig, also of Cedar Rapids, November 13, 1911, in Chicago.[4] They had two children, Henry Christian Spencer (b. 1915) and Carl George Spencer (b. 1917). Her father, George K. Wenig was a prominent local business man. She graduated from the University of Chicago and was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church.[5]
