Wolf + Lamb are an American DJ and electronic music production duo[1] consisting of Zev Eisenberg and Gadi Mizrahi.[2] The duo has founded three record labels, including Wolf + Lamb Records, Wolf + Lamb Black, and Double Standard Records.[2] They are also co-founders of the music collective Crew Love.[3] As a duo they have released two albums, four EPs and three deejay mix compilations.[4] Their material has been described by Pitchfork Media as "silken, sensual dance music."[5]

The duo are known for holding D.I.Y. parties at their studio and venue "the Marcy Hotel,"[6] and the underground events have featured a large number of artists signed to the Wolf + Lamb label.[7][8] Wolf + Lamb's label has been used by musicians and producers such as Nicolas Jaar, Seth Troxler[9] and frequent collaborators Soul Clap to release some of their early compilations, edits and tracks.[10] Wolf + Lamb have played festivals such as Detroit Electronic Music Festival, The BPM Festival, Sónar, Piknic Électronik,[11] and Burning Man.[12]

History

Zev Eisenberg and Gadi Mizrahi were both born and raised in the New York City neighborhood of Flatbush, Brooklyn.[3] Eisenberg (whose first name in Hebrew means Wolf) was raised in a Hasidic family, and Mizrahi (whose first name in Hebrew means Lamb) comes from a traditional Jewish-Egyptian background.[2] Before becoming a DJ, Mizrahi was working as a clothing store owner, and had interest in genres such as Arabic music, hip hop, Funk, R&B, new wave, and minimal techno. While Eisenberg was working as a graphic designer in Jerusalem he attended his first rave.[2] The two met at a Williamsburg party in 2001, and decided to form Wolf + Lamb as a production duo.[3]

Wolf + Lamb started to mix in Brooklyn clubs such as Bunker,[3] and simultaneously in 2001 they began to annually attend the Burning Man festival.[12] The resulting social scene led to their decision to open an underground music venue in New York. Finding an old machine shop on Marcy Avenue, they reworked it into a living space, music studio, and dance party venue[13] dubbed the "Marcy hotel," and in 2005 they began to hold their own long form music and dance parties.[9]

In the summer of 2007 while performing at Burning Man, the duo claim they felt a disconnect between their style of music and the sunset and scenery,[14] and they altered their normal set to incorporate long stretches of pop dance music. Pleased with the audience response, after the event they increasingly brought pop music in to their material,[13][14] including their debut 2008 EP Bear Valley, and their 2009 Brooklynn EP.[4] Their material has been described by Pitchfork Media as "silken, sensual dance music."[5]

In 2010 W + L released their debut full length album To Love Someone,[4] which was followed by the collaborative 2011 compilation mix Wolf + Lamb vs Soul Clap.[10] Afterwards they were joined by Soul Clap on a world tour, with other artists on the label joining as well. In 2012 Wolf + Lamb released their sophomore LP Versus.[4] In 2013 the various artists decided to join under the umbrella term Crew Love, which is both a publishing group and traveling dance party based mainly in Brooklyn and upstate New York.[3] Wolf + Lamb have recently appeared at international and national festivals such as Detroit Electronic Music Festival, The BPM Festival, Sónar, Piknic Électronik,[11] Burning Man,[12] Snowball Music Festival, Voodoo Experience, Decibel Festival, Rhythm & Vines, Electric Forest Festival, and Lightning in a Bottle.

The duo has founded three record labels, including Wolf + Lamb Records, Wolf + Lamb Black, and Double Standard Records.[2] Also called W + L Records, the label has signed artists who were just getting started professionally, such as Nicolas Jaar,[7] as well as more established acts such as Seth Troxler.[1] By 2007, the acts on the Wolf + Lamb Records imprint were frequently collaborating and sharing tours and shows.[9] Of the two sub-labels, Wolf + Lamb Black releases illegal edits and bootlegs, while Double Standard Records is managed by Mizrahi and focuses on a more experimental sound.[3] In April 2009, Resident Advisor named Wolf + Lamb Records its "label of the month."[9]
