Track & Field
The Hawks have had an exceptional athletics record in the last decade and a half under the guidance of head coaches Phil Penza, Chris Heaton, and Steve Steinbergher. At the 1999 All-State Meet, Derrick Knight took home the gold in the 100m in 11.24, while the 4x400m team clocked a 3:23 for first.[6] The following year, Adam Benabdallah won the 200m (22.68) and junior Derek Anderson took the discus (170-04) at All-States. Most impressively, the 4x400m team destroyed the competition in a school record time of 3:20.05.[7] His senior year, Anderson followed up with a state record of 186-03, which still stands to this day. In 2002, Chris Bonner won the All-State 600m with a state record of 1:20.11, and outdoors won the 400m in a blazing time of 47.82.[8] In a repeat of 2001, strongman Rob Chiacchio won the discus throw at All-States with a heave of 166-07.[9]
In 2003 the jump squad took to turn to shine as junior Dan O'Hara sophomore Ted McMahan and freshmen Bill Stillman combined as an impressive team. O'Hara, McMahan and Stillman beat the competition in the high jump relay be over a foot at the Bob McIntyre Relays Indoors in 2003 with a combined height of 17'06".[10] The trio repeated their success in 2004 falling less than 1.5 inches short of a Class A Record for the high jump relay with a combined height of 18'02".[11]
The year 2005 saw the Hawks' 4x800m team (Mark Amirault, Alec Bleday, Dan Higgins, and Ryan Keough) run a near-state record of 7:52.08 at the New England Championships. At the same meet high jumper Ted McMahan won the New England Title with a height of 6'7".[12] Keough was the runner-up in the 400 at states and was the all-state 600 champ indoors (1:22.06).
During the 2006 indoor season, Amirault set a D1 state meet record and ran 4:11 at the all-state meet in the mile. The Hawks' DMR squad also set a state relays record of 10:26. Outdoors, the track team won the MIAA All State Meet.[13] Junior Mark Amirault won the 2-mile in 9:14, Bill Stillman was 5th in the 110m High Hurdles in 15.17 (14.90p, 3rd), the 4x100m team was 5th in 43.67, the 4x800m second in 8:00.27, Dana Anderson won the discus throw in 157-06, Bill Stillman was third in the high jump with a leap of 6-04, and junior Kevon Mason was 5th in the triple jump, bounding 44-02. Amirault also ran 8:59 in the 2-mile and a 4:08 split in the Distance Medley Relay at the Penn Relays.[14] The Hawks' diverse squad combined for a total of 46 points, well ahead of the runner-up team.[15] The following year, Taylor Fitzgerald won the 600m (1:21.93), while Amirault clocked 2:27 in the 1000m (state meet record).[16] Outdoors, Amirault was victorious in the mile with a 4:13, and later ran 8:56 in the 2-mile at Nationals. In the 2009 indoor season, the 4x800m team of Andy Stillman, John Fisher, Pete Dolan, and John Bleday won All-States and posted a best of 8:04.[17] Bleday, a junior, also won the mile in 4:20 at the D1 and all-state championship meets. Stillman (1200), Ryan Brandenburg (400), Dolan (800), and Bleday (1600) also won the McIntyre Elite Relays DMR in 10:33, blasting away the competition. The outdoor season saw Bleday win the 2-mile at the state meet in 9:30. The following year, he was a repeat champion in the mile, winning states and all-states indoors (4:19 and 4:20, respectively) and clocking a personal best of 4:12.7. Outdoors, Bleday won All-States in 9:04, and set a school outdoor record of 4:10.87 in the mile.[18] Recently, the track team had five graduates running for Ivy league schools: Alec Bleday '06 (Penn), Dan Higgins '07 (Penn), Peter Dolan '09 (Harvard), Mark Amirault '07 (Princeton), and John Bleday '10 (Dartmouth). Junior standout DJ Pagliuca won the triple jump at states, all-states, and New Englands in 2012, culminating in a personal best performance of 46-06. In 2013, the 4x400m relay team of Greg Petrucci, Jack Wheeler, DJ Pagliuca, and Robert Marcantonio placed third at the New England Championships, setting a new indoor school record of 3:25.09. Kyle Darrow won the D1 state meet in the long jump, and ultimately jumped a personal record of 22-09. Outdoors, he set a state meet record (23' 1.25), and was part of a 4x100m relay with Conor Biagiotti, Terenze Coleman-Howard, and DJ Pagliuca that ran 43.16 at the all-state meet.
