Yamaha XSR900 is a neo-retro[2][3]standard, 847cc inline-triple UJM “universal Japanese motorcycle”[1]introduced by Yamaha Motor Company in 2016. It was derived from the Yamaha MT-09 (FZ-09 in North America).

Background

Yamaha brought he XSR900 to market in 2016, releasing it in two variants world-wide. The first; a 40th Anniversary Edition, painted in the classic black and yellow, utilizing a gold, inverted fork. This paint scheme is a nod to the classic "chain block" design made popular by Kenny Roberts in the 1970's.[4] The second, a more muted aluminum tank over black frame and black inverted fork.[5] The Yamaha XSR900 and FZ 09 share the same 847cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline 3-cylinder engine with a Yamaha's cross plane crankshaft. This engine was tuned to produce 115.00 HP (83.9 kW)) and 61.46 Nm (6.3 kgf-m or 45.3 ft.lbs) of torque.[1] This new model brought several new features with it when brought to market. These included the addition of new user changeable throttle control mappings, a new ECU, Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS), multiple traction control modes and stiffened suspension.

Model Updates

2017

The 2017 XSR900 was little changed from the 2016 model. Updates to the 2017 release include an updated paint schema, (different releases by location) and updated rubber due to the discontinued s20 Bridgestone Battleax tires found on the 2016 model. Yamaha USA - 2017 XSR900, Titanium Blue[6] Yamaha Canada - 2017 XSR900, Blue & Black[7] Yamaha UK - 2017 XSR900, Garage Metal, Rock Slate & Midnight Black[8]

In November 2016, Yamaha announced the XSR900 Abarth, a limited-edition "Sport Heritage café racer special" for a solo rider. Its specification comprises a bikini nose-fairing, clip-ons, rear-sets, traction control and a slipper clutch. [9] Production of the XSR900 Abarth is to be only 695 units, and each bike is to have a numbered aluminium "authenticity plaque". Yamaha's novel marketing strategy to promote the Abarth prohibits Intending buyers from placing an advance order; instead, those who wish to be one of the first 95 to own an Abarth must make an online bid at 13.00hrs on January 17, 2017. The remaining 600 bikes will be sold conventionally through dealers.[10][11]

Awards

2016

The 2016 XSR900 was released to relative praise, earning several awards for Yamaha's new model, such as, Cycle World's; 2016 Best Middleweight Street Bike[12] and G-Mark's; 2016 Good Design Award.[13]
