Yancy Bailey Spencer III (July 2, 1950 – February 14, 2011) was a surfer from Pensacola, Florida who was widely regarded as the father of Gulf Coast surfing.[1]

Family

Son of Yancy Bailey Spencer, Jr. (1929 - 2010), PFC in World War II,[2] and wife Patricia Lee, who married secondly on April 9, 1988 Helen Delabar Martison (Van Lear, Kentucky, December 18, 1939).[3] Grandson of Yancy Bailey Spencer (North Carolina, 1890 - ?)[4] and wife Georgia "Georgie" C. Smith (1898 - ?),[5] who had three children. Great-grandson of William Robert Spencer and Martha A. Glidewell and of William Wyatt Smith and Sarah "Sallie" Julia Wade.[6]

One of Yancy's brothers, John S. Spencer, is the pastor of a Christian church, Calvary Chapel [Coastline] Gulf Breeze. His other brother, J.B. Schluter, is a Gulf Breeze, Florida City Council member. He married Lydia Ann Brown, daughter of Eugene Fuller "Gene" Brown II and wife Maxine Boatright, paternal granddaughter of Eugene Fuller Brown and Helen Elizabeth Bahbo Dobbins, maternal grandmother of John Leonard Boatright and Lela Lou Loone and great-granddaughter of Silas Fuller Brown and Susan Frances Tower, John Alexander Dobbins and Kate Ward Hurt, Peter Leonard Barem Boatright and Frances Lovina Midgett and Benjamin Frankin Looney and Etna Dallas Eaves.[7]

They had three children, his daughter Abigail Spencer, who is an actress, and two sons, Yancy Bailey Spencer IV, and pro surfer Sterling Spencer. Yancy also had one granddaughter, Britney Spencer-Sosebee, and two grandsons Roman Pruett and Wyatt Spencer.

Death

Yancy died while surfing at County Line, California, on February 14, 2011. The cause of death was thought to be due to a major heart attack.[8]

A statue of him was erected.[9][10]
