Zaatar w Zeit (in Arabic زعتر و زيت) owned by the Lebanese company Breakfast & Co. S.A.L. is an urban eatery founded in Lebanon in 1999[1] and operating with 17 branches in Lebanon[2] and more than 35 franchises in the Middle East including 16 in the UAE. The company has branches in Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The name Zaatar W Zeit (stylized as zaatar w zeit) refers to thyme or "za'atar" in Arabic, a common Middle Eastern herb used in Arabic cuisine used notably in preparation of Za'atar manakish and other products, and "zeit" (olive oil in Arabic). The franchise has since developed to offer a far more varied menu than just zaatar-based products.

History and expansion

Zaatar w Zeit restaurant started as a self-operating business in Lebanon and has expanded through more branches in Lebanon and with franchisees abroad. Headquartered in Jeita, Zouk Mosbeh, Lebanon, it is one of Lebanon's largest restaurant chains. The central kitchen and warehouses are also in Jeita, Zouk Mosbeh. The company began back in 1999 with a concept revolving around Lebanese dough food such as manakish (mankousheh in singular). In 2011 they revamped their business into a quick casual urban eatery. They also have international operations in a number of countries in the Middle East.[3][4][5]

The menu and ordering

Zaatar w Zeit's menu has expanded throughout the years, in response to the changing of their customer tastes and their new image as casual urban eatery. Now Zaatar W Zeit’s menu is divided into the follow sections: Breakfast, Manakeesh, Salads, Platters, Teazers, Pizzas, Specialty wraps, Light menu, Desserts and Beverages[6]

The company launched a mobile ordering platform where customers can order menu items, customize their order, choose the delivery address and even schedule the orders.

Awards and certificates

"Zaatar w Zeit" was the first Lebanese restaurant chain to be certified with the ISO 22000:2005[1][7] in April 2008. It was awarded the Golden Legion award for best quality restaurant chain in the Arab world from the Tatweej Academy for Excellence and Quality in 2012[8] and was honored as "The Best Interactive Award" under the restaurant category during the Pan Arab Awards Academy held on 29 April 2012 in Dubai.[9]

Marketing and distribution

"Zaatar w Zeit" engages in extensive advertising promotional campaigns through radio, print magazines, billboards and sponsorships of students events and social occasions and strong presence online.[10]

It has also launched in 2010 a "loyalty program" with regular clients being able to redeem part of the purchase cost through various food purchase discounts. The program also includes promotions, competitions and prizes according to client loyalty to the brand. The corporation is active in social responsibility, making various donations[11][12]

Logo

In 2011, Pearl Fisher[13] created a new visual identity for Lebanese food retail chain, aiming for a "bolder contemporary look and feel".[14] Jonathan Ford, the Creative Partner in Pearl Fisher, said, "The new logo is a distinctive, modern marque that provides a more literal and graphic expression by creating a simple link between the thyme and the oil, the leaf and the droplet, and forms a distinctive "Z" within the negative space.”[15]
