The Bangabandhu Cup or Bangabandhu Gold Cup was an international association football tournament organised by the Bangladesh Football Federation as a tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. It was launched in 1996, this was the fourth time the tournament had been held. Eight teams from Asian Football Confederation participated in this edition.
Format
In the group stage, 8 teams were divided into two groups of 4-4 teams. Each group was a round-robin of 6 games, where each team played one match against each of the other teams in the same group. Teams were awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw and none for a defeat. The teams finishing first and second in each group qualified to the semi-finals.

Fifteen matches will be played at two different venues in Dhaka and Jessore. The Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, and Shamsul Huda Stadium in Jessore. All matches were played at the following two grounds:

In the 2016 final, Nepal defeated Bahrain U-23 in final by 3–0. This was the first win of Nepal in any tournament after 23 years. Within 5 minutes, Nepalese striker Bimal Gharti Magar scored his 2nd goal for tournament and opened the score for Nepalese Team. Assisted by Anjan Bista, Bishal Rai scored the 2nd goal in the final to Nepal in the second half. In injury time, the rising player of Nepal Nawayug Shrestha scored his 4th goal in the whole tournament. With this, Nepal defeated Bahrain by 3–0 goals and lifted the trophy. Striker Bimal Gharti Magar won the Man Of The Match for his goal and an assist.
