Aasam Mukhtar Chaudhry

Aasam Mukhtar Chaudhry T.St (Punjabi, Urdu: عاصم مختار چوہدری تمغه شجاعت); b. January 1, 1982) is a Pakistani lawyer, born in Bahadurkay Village, District Toba Tek Singh. He was awarded Tamgah-e-Shujjat (Gallantry) on March 23, 2016.

Early life and family

Aasam Mukhtar Chaudhry belongs to Arain family. His grandfather was a prominent farmer settled in Jalandhar, India before partition of sub continent. His father Muhammad Mukhtar Chaudhry was a senior advocate in the Supreme Court of Pakistan. He also served as Chief Law Officer in OGDCL. Aasam Mukhtar Chaudhry is second eldest child of his parents. He has two brothers and three sisters. His younger brother is a famous handmade carpets businessman and youngest brother is a Geologist. He is nephew of famous lawyer Mian Muhammad Aslam, Vice-President of the Lahore High Court Bar Association. His uncle Amjad Ali Javaid is elected MPA from PP-86 on the ticket of Pakistan Muslim League (N).

Career in Law

Aasam Mukhtar Chaudhry graduated from Punjab University and was conferred with Roll of Honor by the University. He passed his law degree from the Islamia University Bahawalpur. Earlier to law degree he also did his masters in Political Sciences from University of the Punjab. He was active sportsperson and member of University Badminton and Lawn Tennis Team and won on board and University levels.

He became the member of the Islamabad Bar Association in 2007 and Islamabad High Court Bar Association in 2009. He started his career with Chaudhry Abdul Aziz (Advocate Supreme Court of Pakistan) & Mr. Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani and soon became a senior partner of the firm Mukhtar Law Associates. He made legal history by representing Chief Commissioner office of Islamabad Capital Territory against shisha campaign in the court of law. Chaudhry is currently working in the establishment of Islamabad High Court, Islamabad.

Islamabad District Courts Attack

On 3 March 2014, terrorists attacked District Courts in Islamabad. As a result of the attack eleven people were killed and twenty-five people were injured including Aasam Mukhtar Chaudhry who received multiple bullet injuries. He remained in hospital for almost one year.

History

The assailants arrived at the courthouse around nine in the morning, carrying rifles and wearing suicide vests. The attackers first began throwing grenades at police officers who were at the scene. They then started shooting at people. When the police officers tried to attack back at the assailants, they blew themselves up.

It was originally not known who the attackers were, but later it was revealed that Ahrar-ul-Hind was the group behind the attack.

Tamgha-e-Shujaat

The President of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain awarded Tamgha-e-Shujaat (Gallantry) to Aasam Mukhtar Chaudhry in a ceremony at President House, Islamabad on March 23, 2016 for an act of valor and saving lives of other people during the attack.

He remains vocal and active about Terrorism in Pakistan.
