The Adamson University - College of Engineering is one of the nine colleges of Adamson University, a private Catholic university located in Manila, Philippines. It has nine departments.

Background

Within the context of the University mission statement and objectives, College of Engineering trains men and women along scientific, technological, and humanistic fields and at the same time to inculcate love of God and Country so that, with the highest moral and ethical standards, they can meet effectively the requirements for economic and social development responsive to, and in consonance with, national goals and aspirations.

As such, the various curricula are designed to meet the scientific, technological, social, cultural, religious, and physical well-being of the students to make them responsible members and leaders of the community.

Teaching efficiency and effectiveness of the curricula in enhancing the balanced development of students are appraised through continuous evaluation. Toward this end, faculty and curricula development is a continuing concern of the college.

Discipline is emphasized. However, responsible exercise of academic freedom within the campus and classrooms is observed to develop student initiative, creativity, resourcefulness, and leadership, under the guidance of the faculty.

In order to keep the students abreast with the requirements and development of business and industry, the program has a practicum component which includes field trips, plant visit, on-the-job training, and seminars. Research is a significant part of the program.[1]

Mining, Geology and Ceramics Engineering

Chemical Engineering is a five-year degree program that is concerned with the study, development and application of:

Integrated in this program is the Chemical Engineer's accountability for the efficient and effective use of methods and national resources, the safeguards to preserve the environment, and the ethical aspects of the profession. The first two years are concerned with the basic knowledge and skills related to the profession. This includes Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Basic Engineering Sciences.

The last three years are directed toward the development of professional skills which include basic knowledge and application of transport phenomena, thermodynamics, and kinetics. The processes of evaluation, planning, designing, preparation of specifications and cost estimates, operation and management industrial plants are a component of the program.

All these are integrated in "Plant Design and Project Study" a course where students study the manufacture of a product including its marketing, technical, and financial aspects. Plant visits, seminars, and other fora are undertaken to provide concrete application of theories and principles learned.[3]

Petroleum Engineering

Adamson University continues to make innovations in education with its offering of a new engineering program.

The university has now opened the Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering program for School Year 2015-2016 with its first batch of enrollees starting this semester. The Petroleum Engineering program prepares and enables students for a career dealing with activities related to the production of hydrocarbons, which can either be crude oil or natural gas. It also involves the technology of economically developing and producing oil, gas, steam, and hot water reservoirs and designing disposal facilities. Emphasis will be given on the use of advanced technology together with good knowledge of related disciplines, such as geophysics, petroleum geology, drilling, and economics, among others. The program’s curriculum is designed to meet these educational standards by emphasizing fundamental knowledge, transferable skills, and lifelong learning.

Currently administered by the Chemical Engineering Department, BS Petroleum Engineering is allied with other College of Engineering programs such as Chemical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Geology. AdU is only the third university in the Philippines to offer the program, after Palawan State University and Batangas State University, and the first private university in the country to do so. This new offering also responds to the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) list of in-demand courses for 2014-2018.

Graduates of the BS Petroleum Engineering program can look forward to a career that ranks high on several “best jobs” list. Petroleum engineers have great job opportunities not only in the country but overseas as well, with salary levels that are higher than the national average.

The BS Petroleum Engineering program is an exciting addition to the College of Engineering and aims to continue its tradition of being a premiere school for engineers. This new offering will see Adamsonian engineers having a future full of challenges and opportunities, thus allowing them a rewarding career.[4]

Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is one of the pioneer engineering disciplines in the history of mankind. In the University, it is offered by the Civil Engineering Department as a five-year degree program designed to apply the principles and concepts of the course in the planning, design, construction, and research associated with community growth and development. The major areas of study include hydraulics, sanitation, structures, and transportation. The program includes inter-disciplinary modules which direct the creative application of engineering principles to the emerging challenges and problems consequent to advances in technology and the developments in the community. Technical knowledge and experiences are enhanced by courses in the humanities and social sciences in order that the student can gain knowledge and skills in critical thinking, problem identification and analysis, and decision making within the context of the ethical aspects of the profession.

Finally, a functional relationship with the industry is achieved through the use of laboratory and field equipment, seminars, plant visits, and a guided exchange of ideas in current professional theories and practices.[5]

Computer Engineering

Computer Engineering is a five-year degree program that deals with the study of computer systems. The curriculum covers both software and hardware and develops the student's ability to analyze computer systems, designs, construction of electronic equipment and its peripherals. Since computer science is directed to the theory and technology of computation, the curriculum does not specialize along traditional lines that divide hardware and software, systems and applications, or theory and experiment. Rather, a unified approach to the design and analysis of computers and of computing structures is employed. This background prepares the student for placements as computer engineers in government industry. It also qualifies them for related job with computer manufacturers and consulting firms as systems programmers as well as application programmers with scientific, research, and business organizations. The ethical considerations with respect to the profession is an important component of the program of study.[6]

Electrical Engineering

Electrical Engineering Department, directed towards the study of the generation, transmission, control, and utilization of electrical and electromagnetic energy. The first two years of the curriculum give the student the basic knowledge and skills on social sciences, the humanities, and the basic technical requirements of the course. It also provides opportunities to develop skills in critical thinking, problem identification and analysis and design of electric power systems, equipment systems, communication and control systems. In addition, basic knowledge on the transmission and processing of information is also integrated. This broad spectrum of subjects provide challenging opportunities for career-related placements in industry. The practical aspects of the course are enhanced by plant visits, conferences, seminars, and research activities.[7]

Electronics Engineering

The program, Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering, is designed to provide graduates with an education in the fundamentals of electronics engineering that will allow them to be immediately competitive in industry or in graduate work while providing them with the best opportunity for achieving their full potential during their lifetime. The graduates will also develop a sense of professional responsibility and social awareness. The program provides practical applications as evidenced by laboratory, design, project study, computer exercises and practicum courses that prepares graduates to work well whether independently or as part of a group.

Graduates of the Electronics Engineering program are prepared to immediately set up a career or practice the profession related to Broadcasting; Telecommunications; Semiconductor Device Fabrication/Manufacturing; Electronics Design; Computer Systems; Instrumentation and Telemetry; Automation, Feedback, Process Control, Robotics, and Mechatronics; Industrial Electronics; Signal Processing; Optics; and Medical/Biomedical Electronics.[8]

Industrial Engineering

Industrial Engineering is a five-year degree program that offers an inter-disciplinary training aimed towards the optimization of systems involved in the transformation of resources into goods and services.

Today, the Industrial Engineering profession requires a higher level of competence and skill than was contemplated a few years back. In response to this challenge, the curriculum includes the art and applications of the system concept, the formulation, analysis, synthesis, and the solution of management problems through the use of quantitative approaches and of higher mathematics. The traditional tools of time study and value analysis as well as the study of basic management concepts are retained in the program.

The first two years give the basic knowledge and skills both in the field of humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and the physical sciences. These provide the student with opportunities to develop skills for problem identification, analysis, division making through the use of the scientific methods. It also develops his ability to synthesize abstract solutions into meaningful constructs, and to enhance his cognitive skills in applied mathematics and statistics.

The last three years offer courses for professional development in the areas of methods engineering, systems dynamics, operations research, and basic engineering sciences. To prepare the student for entry into the professional world, the curriculum offers the student electives from the four available modules: corporate planning, production, marketing, or administrative applications of the profession.[9]

Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is a five-year degree program concerned with the art and science of generating, transmitting, and utilizing mechanical and heat power. The curriculum provides opportunities to gain knowledge of machines with respect to their design, construction, operation, and functions.

The first two years of the program provide the basic knowledge and skills for the course including computer fundamentals. It also develops skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making. The last three years are concerned with professional development in the understanding of the different elements of machine and their kinetics.

This entails study of machine design, refrigeration and air conditioning, power plants and combustion, and basic nuclear engineering. Industrial aspects of the profession are also taken up including plant design, production, sales management, operations, research, and development. The students development is enhanced by plant visits, seminars, and conferences.[10]

Mining, Geology, and Ceramics Engineering

Adamson University, the country's first Engineering University to offer the program, Ceramic Engineering, was founded in 1932. In 1934, technical courses and the school and the school for industrial chemistry were added. The Ceramics Technology was part of the initial courses by the then Adamson School of Industrial chemistry and engineering. In 1941, the school was granted the university status and became Adamson University. In 1970, the government approved the offering of the four- year program in the Bachelor of Science in Ceramic Engineering. In 1983, the program was fully upgraded to a five–year program under the management of the Vincentian Fathers.

In 1968, the management authorized the creation of the Mining, Geology, and Ceramics Department under the College of Engineering to handle the interrelated courses, namely; Mining Engineering, Geology and Ceramics Engineering. It is designed to serve as the Center of the Quality Education for the advancement, dissemination, and application of knowledge in Mining Engineering, Geosciences, and Ceramic Engineering, and to respond to the call for integral evangelization. Specifically, it aims to provide quality education responsive to local and local demands of competitiveness.[11]

Mining Engineering

The degree of Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering is a five-year course that aims to provide students with an extensive training in various aspects of specialization in Mining Engineering. Such training encompasses the different phases of the production of Mineral Resources; Prospecting and Exploration, Principles and Metallurgical Analysis, Mine Planning and Design, Mine Development and Production, Mine Economics, Underground and Surface Mining, Mine Ventilation, Mine Maintenance Technology and Management, Mine Safety, Environmental, Mine Surveying and the Mining Laws & Ethics;

It also includes conducting researches and studies in both the basic and applied aspects of the Mining and Mineral Processing Operations, develops consciousness on the role of Mining Engineers in the optimum extraction, utilization, conservation, protection, and management of the earth's natural resources.

The program also allows the students to choose elective subjects to enhance knowledge in specific areas. Fieldwork is given emphasis and the students are required to take the Mine and Mill Practice for two summer months in local Mining site, at the end of the training, an activity report is submitted as proof of the student's ability to prepare a technical report regarding Mining operations The program also allows the students to choose elective subjects to enhance knowledge in specific areas.[12]

Geology Engineering

The degree of Bachelor of Science in Geology is a five-year course that aims to provide students with a comprehensive training in various fields of Geology such as History of the Earth, Identification, Classification and Designation of various Rocks and Fossils Formations. Emphasis is given to the study of the Earth's Deformation such as Folds, Faults and Joints, Mineral Exploration and Development, Economic Geology, Petroleum Exploration, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Peleontology, Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology, and Environmental Geology.

Geologic Mappings are essential components of this course. It includes conducting researches and studies of the Earth Sciences, developing a consciousness on the role of the Earth Scientist in the conservation, protection, and management of the Earth's natural resources and other factors that contribute to improving the quality of life on Earth.

The program allows the students to choose Geology electives to enhance knowledge in specific areas. Fieldwork is given emphasis and the students are required to take a Field Geology Practice for two summer months in any of the local Geological exploration companies. Geologic field mapping using the high technological Geographical Information System (GIS) is given emphasis as proof of the student's ability to conduct an independent Geological investigation.[13]

Ceramics Engineering

The degree of Bachelor of Science in Ceramics Engineering is a five-year course that aims to provide students with an extensive training in Ceramics Engineering as foundation for: Careers in the various fields of Ceramics Engineering such as Porcelain and Fine Ceramics, Structural and Refractory Clay Products, Glass, Enamel and Cement, Environmental and Industrial Wastes Management, Quality Control; Conducts researches and studies in both the basic and applied aspects of the Ceramics Material and Manufacturing Operations; and Develops consciousness on the role of Ceramic Engineers in the optimum utilization and management of the earth natural resources, and other factors that contribute to improving the quality of life on earth.

The 2000 undergraduate curriculum includes 81 credit units of professional and allied subjects in Ceramic Engineering, such as Ceramic Crystal Chemistry, Ceramic Raw Materials, Unit Operation, Unit Processes, Refractories, Glazes, Whitewares, Enamels, Cement and Plaster, Glass Technology, Advanced Ceramics, Quality Control, Industrial Waste Management, Ceramic Metals, Structural Clay Products, Ceramic Engineering, Testing Ceramic Products, Properties of Ceramic Products, Computer-Aided Analysis of Ceramic System, Ceramic Engineering Design, Kin Operations, Principles of Geology, and Mineralogy.

The curriculum also includes 26 units of Mathematics, 38 units of Natural/Physical Sciences, 4 units of basic Engineering Sciences including Research Subject, 42 units of Non-Technical Subjects including Languages, Social Sciences and General Education, and 26 other units as miscellaneous.

The program also allows the students to choose elective subjects to enhance knowledge in specific areas. Industry visits and summer job training (practicum) are given emphases for the students to appreciate their classroom learning. Students are required to perform Thesis work in their chosen field of specialization prior to their completion of the course.[14]
