Ako si Kim Samsoon, or simply Kim Samsoon (International title), is a romantic comedy Philippine drama that was aired on GMA Network, a remake of a popular and award-winning Korean drama that originally aired on MBC TV on Summer 2005. The series was part of the network's 58th Anniversary celebration.[3]

Re-telling the story of My Lovely Sam Soon, dubbed as the Korean Bridget Jones, the series began airing on June 30, 2008, replacing Babangon Ako't Dudurugin Kita,[4] and ended on October 10, 2008. The title role, previously played by Kim Sun-a, was played by Regine Velasquez. This show marked the last television directing of Khryss Adalia who died due to colon cancer on October 13, 2008 after the finale week.[2]

It was re-aired on GMA Life TV from December 20, 2010 to April 1, 2011. It currently airs on KIKU-TV in Honolulu, Hawaii since October 21, 2012. Ako si Kim Samsoon is also currently airing via Fox Filipino which premiered on May 28, 2013.

Overview

Originally, it aired as My Lovely Sam Soon in South Korea. The series was a major hit in South Korea since its premiere and 50.5% of Korean households tuned into the finale, with a viewership rate of over 40%.[5]

Some critics believe its huge success was due to the show focused in the life of single chubby middle-aged woman, played by Kim Sun Ah. The physical appearance and stereotype that the female character highlighted (in the sense of mid aged and overweight) portrayed in the drama increased dramatically the popularity particularly in mid aged South Korean women.[6]

Plot

The story begins with Samsoon dealing with two devastating news- her fiancé stood her up at their wedding, and their family's bakery was gutted by a fire. Samsoon then decides to apply as a pastry chef in a five-star restaurant where she crosses paths with the rich and arrogant Cyrus in a very unusual spot-the male comfort room where he gives her a piece of advice about love and men. Not long after, Cyrus will discover Samsoon's outstanding talent in baking and hires her to work in his restaurant. Cyrus has his share of problems too. His domineering mother insists that he marries soon. To be free of his mother's consistent prodding, Cyrus offers Samsoon a love contract-in which she must act as his girlfriend in exchange for a huge amount of money. He offers Samsoon the contract because he knows he will never fall for a girl like her. Although hesitant and furious about Cyrus's overconfidence, Samsoon takes the opportunity to pay her family's debts. But, they spend more time together and Samsoon soon realizes that she is in love with Cyrus in the resort where Cyrus' family owns.[7]

Success

The show opened with a rare 33.8% of rating on June 30, 2008 with its competitor My Girl on ABS-CBN. The success of Ako si Kim Samsoon got to mainstream as Regine Velasquez comic antics flow to thousands of audience every night. The show ends on October 10, 2008 with a 38.2% of rating.
