Altibase is privately owned, a multinational software corporation that provides Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) headquartered in Seoul, South Korea. The company was founded in 1999 and now has offices in South Korea, USA, and China. Altibase focuses on high-intensity transactional processing through RAM (Random Access Memory), complementing its disk-resident database in a single-database solution.^[1]

History

• 1991 – 1997: Was started with “Mr.RT” project, which was an IMDBMS development project to research on the effects of RAM on traditional RDBMS, conducted by [[ETRI|Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute]], a government-funded research organization in South Korea^[2]
• 1999: Was incorporated and began specializing in in-memory computing technology^[2]
• 2000:
  • Released the first version, called Spiner, for commercial use
  • Surpassed 50% of the in-memory DBMS market share in South Korea^[3]
• 2002:
  • Released the second version and renamed it to ALTIBASE v2.0
• 2003:
  • Released ALTIBASE v3.0^[4] and entered the Chinese Main Memory Database Management System market^[5]
• 2004:
  • Released version 4.0, the world’s first in-memory database^[6] with hybrid architecture, combining RAM and disk databases
• 2005:
  • Began working with major Chinese Telecommunications providers, such as China Unicom, for billing systems^[7]
  • Began working with major Twainese Financial companies for home trading systems^[8]
  • Was certified as GS(Good Software) by TTA(Telecommunications Technology Association)^[9]
• 2006:
  • Received “Presidential Award for Best Software” from the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs^[10]
• 2007:
  • Released ALTIBASE HDB v5.0
• 2008:
  • Received “Superior Software Award” from China for excellence in the Chinese telecommunications industry

  • Released version 5.5.1 and renamed it to ALTIBASE HDB(Hybrid Database)
  • Renamed ADS(Altibase Data Stream) to ALTIBASE DSM, which was data caching software for use in real-time Complex Event Processing^[12]
  • Received "Korean Technology Award 2011" and ALTIBASE HDB was nominated as “10 New Technology”^[13]
  • Introduced its certifications, ACP (Altibase Certification Professional), ACD (Altibase Certified Developers), ACA (Altibase Certified Administration), and ACE (Altibase Certified Expert)^[14]
• 2012:

According to Markets and Markets research, Altibase is a major vendor in the in-memory computing market,^[18] with over 550 customers and thousands of installations globally.^[19]

Altibase's global clients in the telecommunications, financial services, manufacturing, and utilities sectors include Bloomberg, LG U+, E*TRADE, HP, UAT Inc., SK Telecom, KT Corporation (formerly Korea Telecom), Hyundai Securities, Samsung Electronics, Shinhan Bank, Woori Bank, The South Korean Ministry of Defense, G-Market, and Chung-Ang University.^[20][21]

Altibase users in Japan include FX Prime, a foreign exchange services company, and Retela Crea Securities.^[22][23]

In China, the three major telecommunications companies, China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom, utilize ALTIBASE HDB in 29 of 31 Chinese provinces.^[24]

Products and Services^[25]

• ALTIBASE HDB(Hybrid Database):

  ALTIBASE HDB is a hybrid DBMS with Hybrid Architecture that combines an in-memory database with a conventional disk-resident database.^[26] ALTIBASE HDB features include SQL standards compliance, high-availability, replication, real-time ACID compliance, spatial, vertical and horizontal scalability, and compatibility with standard interfaces and programming languages such as ODBC, JDBC, OLE DB, .Net, Java, C/C++, and Precompiler.

  According to Gartner, “ALTIBASE HBD has a broad use case applicability. In addition to applying its technology to unique billing scenarios in telecom, as well as real-time flaw detection in manufacturing scenarios, customers cite their use of HBD for analytics and storage of text and rich media content.”^[1]

  In 2015, Altibase integrated ALTIBASE XDB to ALTIBASE HDB. ALTIBASE XDB(eXtreme DBMS) was first released in 2013. XDB was a traditional relational database that had fast data processing speeds in main-memory. It came with high-availability, replication, and scalability features and with three interfaces include Direct Access Mode, Direct Access API Mode as well as conventional client/server protocols such as TCP/IP and IPC for more complex database operations.^[16]

• ALTIBASE CEP:

  ALTIBASE CEP is a Windows-based data caching software for use in real-time complex event processing applications. This product was formerly known as DSM ("Altibase Data Stream").^[11]

Advanced Features^[26]

• Unified Engine

  ALTIBASE HDB’s unified engine allows for the use of an in-memory and on-disk database solution under a single solution.

  Altibase markets it as a “hybrid” database solution. This garners a significant advantage over a bundled solution because it omits the need for an abstraction layer for disparate database systems to communicate. According to Gartner, “references gave this company high marks for overall performance of its operational DBMS, as well as for support, professional services, and ease of use.”

• Replication

  ALTIBASE HDB’s built-in replication functionality maintains an up-to-date backup on an active server. In the event the server is unexpectedly terminated, ALTIBASE HDB immediately resumes service from an identical database on an alternate server so as to provide uninterruptible service. In addition, Altibase HDB’s replication option utilizes a shared-nothing architecture, which provides significant speed and stability gains over shared disk architectures.

  Altibase supports two modes of replication: Asynchronous and Synchronous.

• Load Balancing

  In a replicated ALTIBASE HDB database environment, user transactions can be divided into two or more groups. Each group of transactions is executed on a corresponding server, and the changes on one server are reflected on the other servers automatically. This allows for increased performance while retaining data consistency.

• Out-Place MVCC

  Memory table-spaces in Altibase are capable of utilizing out-place MVCC. This contrasts from the in-place MVCC used traditionally by disk-based relational databases such as Oracle.

  Out-place MVCC creates a new version of the original record on UPDATEs, and the existing record points to this new version via a newly-created reference pointer. The new record also includes a reference pointer back to the original record, resulting in a significant performance gain, as it does not need to make a copy from the undo segment. However, this comes at the expense of increased memory usage.

• Spatial Support

  ALTIBASE HDB supports the use of advanced spatial data types for representing geometric objects such as points, lines and polygons as well as numerous functions and features for working with these data types.
