Ansar Youth Project (often abbreviated as AYP) is a youth-led organisation based in the London Borough of Brent and Harrow, co-founded by Mohammed Sadiq Mamdani[1] and a group of young people of mainly Muslim backgrounds in August 2005 after the 7/7 London bombings, who were concerned about the lack of faith and culturally sensitive youth services which encouraged Muslim youth to play an active role in society. This start was known as the social revolution, at first introducing Muslim communities to the concept of youth-work and challenging the traditional cultural and sectarian divisions.[2]
Background
2005–2007: Introduction
Ansar Youth Project was co-founded by Mohammed Sadiq Mamdani and Kumayl Nazerali in August 2005, in response to the affection of young Muslims after the 7/7 London bombings. The mission was to encourage Muslim youth to play an active role in society who were concerned about the lack of faith and culturally sensitive youth services which.[3]
2007–2010: Transition from pilot project to an actual organisation
In 2008, Ansar Youth Project made the transition from a pilot project to the largest youth organization serving the London Borough of Harrow and Brent. AYP at this point had a membership of over 400 children and young people which support young people between the ages of 11 and 19 years by providing a weekly Youth Club, a leadership skills programme and regular trips, camps and residentials. They have stated that they are reliant on a team of 60 volunteers who serve the local community.[4] In 2009, Mamdani stepped down as Head of Operations.
2011–2014: Expansion and recognition
In 2014, AYP announced a new development program which enabled them to manage and run their own organisation. Each participant got between £300 and £2,500 to run their own project, learn management, finance, marketing and fundraising skills, gain qualifications in first aid and business and chair meetings. It was in partnership with Sufra.[5]
