The Arusha–Holili–Taveta–Voi Road is a road in Tanzania and Kenya, connecting the towns of Arusha and Holili in Tanzania to Taveta and Voi in Kenya.[1]

Location

The road starts at Arusha, Tanzania and makes its way eastwards through Moshi and on to the border town of Holili. At Holili, the road connects across the Tanzania/Kenya border to Taveta, continuing eastwards to end at Voi, on the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway. The road from end to end measures approximately 230 kilometres (140 mi).[2][3] However, the road contract is projected at 157.5 kilometres (98 mi).[4]

Overview

This road forms an important road link in the Mombasa-Arusha-Dodoma link with onward connections to Rwanda, Burundi and even Uganda and Eastern DR Congo. The African Development Bank is lending US$232.5 million towards this project, constituting 89.1 percent of the budgeted total cost. Kenya will contribute US$15.6 million, while Tanzania will contribute US$12.3 million.[5]

Upgrade to double carriageway

In June 2015, construction of the double carriage way from Arusha through Moshi to Holili began under the auspices of the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS). The work is being carried out by Hanil-Jiangsu JV, a South Korean construction company, with the consultant engineer being Cheil Engineering Company (Korea). It is anticipated that this work will be completed in 2016.[6][7] The work on the Tanzanian side is budgeted at US$85 million.[8]

Work on the Kenyan side commenced in May, 2014, and was commissioned in September 2015 by Jakaya Kikwete, then President of Tanzania and Uhuru Kenyatta, the President of Kenya. The cost of the work on the Kenyan side is budgeted at US$353 million.[8][9][10]
