Asheville Outlets is a shopping mall located just off I-26 on Brevard Road (North Carolina Highway 191) in Asheville, North Carolina. Outlet stores include Ann Taylor Factory Store, Banana Republic Factory Store, Brooks Brothers Factory Store, Coach, Cole Haan, GAP Factory Store, J. Crew Factory, Nike Factory Store, RH Outlet, Tommy Hilfiger, Under Armour, and Vera Bradley. Field & Stream has also opened at Asheville Outlets.

History

Biltmore Square Mall, the original shopping center on the site, was built in 1989 with Hess's, Proffitt's, and Belk as its anchor stores.

In March 1998, the mall management (along with other plaintiffs) did attempt to resist annexation of the property on which they reside into the city of Asheville. The attempt was unsuccessful.[1]

In November 2006, Symphony Property Group and two local investment groups (collectively calling themselves Biltmore Eight, LLC) purchased the shopping center[2] with the assistance of a third party loan.[3] Thereafter the managing firm disclosed that the owner decided to expand the property in the first quarter of 2007 by an additional 83,000 sq ft (7,700 m2).

Cinebarre, a new concept in movie theaters and restaurants, was unveiled in the Biltmore Square Mall in 2007. Food, beer, and wine are served before and during the screening of films in the theater.[4]

The mall closed on January 31, 2014, except for the anchors and Dollar Tree.[5] Belk closed at the end of 2014.[6]

The redeveloped shopping center opened on May 1, 2015 as an outlet mall called Asheville Outlets. Developed by New England Development, its new anchor stores are Dillard's & Field & Stream with other stores including Nike Factory Store, Under Armour, Coach, Abercrombie & Fitch Outlet, Cole Haan, Tommy Hilfiger, Bath & Body Works and close to 65 other stores. It is an open-air mall that features covered breezeways and a fire and water fountain. [7]

Mall decline

When Biltmore Square Mall first opened in 1989 it wasn't a popular mall due to the large Asheville Mall nearby which dominated Asheville's retail market. In the late 1990s The Asheville Mall expanded adding a food court and many more stores. That caused some tenants to move to the thriving Asheville Mall. Biltmore Square was at its highest vacancy rate at 40%, Although its 3 anchor tenants were unchanged since it opened. In 2007 Proffitt's an original anchor closed due to a merging with Belk. The same year Steve & Barry's opened in the former Proffitt's location and closed in 2009 due to bankruptcy. Cinebarre opened in 2007 near the food court and was a movie theater restaurant. Davis furniture took Steve & Barry's place and Moved in 2013. When Biltmore Square Mall announced its closing in late 2013 the anchors Belk, Dillard's, and Cinebarre, along with a Dollar Tree could remain open. In early 2014 Belk closed.
