Casamigos tequila was founded in 2013 by Rande Gerber, George Clooney, and Mike Meldman.[1]
History
The distilling process and recipe for the tequila were initially used only for bottles intended for private use by Rande Gerber and George Clooney, two friends who had decided to create their own tequila. As they were producing about a thousand bottles a year for themselves and friends, the distillery asked them to license themselves as a business in order to keep producing it at that level. Following this, they started Casamigos as a company to sell the tequila, adding Mike Meldman as a co-founder.[2] The name is loosely translated into English as "House of friends",[3] it was also the name of the neighboring vacation homes that Clooney and Gerber owned in Mexico when they started the company[4] (the homes were sold in 2016).[5] In 2016 the Casamigos Spirits Company was founded to become the importer of Casamigos tequila from its production facility in Mexico, with Lee Ensidler serving as CEO. Ensidler had recently led the importing of Casamigos while working at the Sidney Frank Importing Company.[6]
Tequila
Casamigos produces a premium tequila produced from 100% Blue Weber agaves[1] grown in the Jalisco Highlands.[7] The tequila's varieties include Blanco (aged two months), Reposado (aged seven months), and Añejo versions.[8][9] Originally the company only offered the Blanco and Reposado,[10] before adding the Añejo version, which is aged fourteen months.[11]
Public campaigns
In Casamigos' first advertisement, Clooney, Cindy Crawford, Kevin Bacon, and a series of other individuals are found in bed together after a night of consuming the tequila.[3][12] Then in 2015, Casamigos launched its first social media campaign, focusing on user-made videos.[13] In 2016 the brand co-sponsored a tasting event with Coya London in their dining room,[14] and formed another partnership with Sprinkles Cupcakes to produce a limited edition margarita cupcake.[15] Casamigos has been the recipient of a number of spirits awards.[16]
