Chełmsko Śląskie [ˈxɛu̯mskɔ ˈɕlɔ̃skʲɛ] (German: Schömberg) is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Lubawka, within Kamienna Góra County, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in south-western Poland, near the border with the Czech Republic.[1] Prior to 1945 it was in Germany.
It lies approximately 7 kilometres (4 mi) south-east of Lubawka, (German: Liebau), 17 kilometres (11 mi) south of Kamienna Góra, (German: Landeshut), and 86 kilometres (53 mi) south-west of the regional capital Wrocław, (German: Breslau).
Following the end of World War II in 1945, the town was placed under Polish administration according to the decisions of the Potsdam Conference, and all remaining German inhabitants were expelled westward[2] and replaced with Polish settlers. The German portion of the cemetery of the Catholic Church was destroyed and up until as recent as 2004 German headstones and grave markers continued to be desecrated.
The village has a population of 1,900.
