Clean for a Day is the twelfth episode of seventh season of the American sitcom Modern Family. It aired on February, 10 2016 on American Broadcasting Company (ABC). The episode is directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller and written by Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh.
Plot
Haley (Sarah Hyland), Alex (Ariel Winter) and Luke (Nolan Gould) are devastated when Phil (Ty Burrell) announces to them that Claire (Julie Bowen) will take her responsibilities at Jay's company as the new boss. Actually, Claire wants to toss the family's old items but Phil and Luke disagree with that and try without success to save them. Claire has a change of heart when she hears an old teddy bear after she threw it in garbage. She soon regrets her decision but Phil reassures her when he shows her a garage full of their old possessions, proving by the way that he didn't get ride of them. He also gets back the teddy boys, which gets on the family's nerves and is forced to "kill it", much to his annoyance.
While Alex tries to clean her room, she finds an old sweater which is Sanjay's. She and Haley go to his house in order to give him back, and Alex is still mad after their break-up. But when Sanjay truly apologizes to her, it's Haley who believes him, allowing her younger sister to have a second chance.
Elsewhere, Jay (Ed O'Neill) and Gloria (Sofía Vergara) enjoy the former's retirement. But Jay does not want to stay inactive and decides to take a flying lesson. Gloria's nightmares about Jay inspires Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) who decides to follow him. As the two of them are in a plane with an instructor, Jay accidentally knocks him out, but he manages to regain consciousness as they fear for their lives.
Gloria searches for a new hobby as Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) suggests her to have a passion which could eventually be a common ground with Jay. She asks him to teach him everything he knows about golf. Mitchell proves to be a terrible coach and is very disappointed when both Gloria and Lilly (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) fire him as a coach and replace him by a real instructor for Gloria and Manny (Rico Rodriguez) who will become Lilly's flute personal coach. At the end of this episode, both Jay and Gloria admit that they tried a different hobby in order to be close of the other and notice that this act also proved that they really loved each other.
