Comedy Central Germany is a German-speaking equivalent to Comedy Central. The channel is available free-to-air and on local digital/cable operators in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. It broadcasts many American and British imports as well as original programming. It launched on 15 January 2007 replacing former music channel VIVA Plus. Prior to its launch Viacom Germany did have a comedy channel called NICK Comedy which was broadcast from 21:15 to 06:00 on Nickelodeon Germany.

Since 15 December 2008 Comedy Central Germany has ceased broadcasting 24 hours a day and is now timesharing with Nickelodeon Germany, running from 20:15 (CET) to 05:45 (CET).

On 1 October 2011, Comedy Central Germany ceased using the theme of a world-sized tower broadcasting the network/skyscrapers in favor for the new logo used in the USA.

History Of Comedy Central Germany

Comedy Central Germany was licensed by the Media Authority of North Rhine-Westphalia (LfM), which is also the supervising state media authority for the channel. On 24 November 2006, the license of the previous music-oriented interest channel VIVA Plus was changed to entertainment channel Comedy Central. By decision, made by the LfM, dated 19 November 2004, Comedy Central got a license for a period until 20 March 2010. Viacom initially tried to establish the channel independently and as a 24-hour program. Since 15 December 2008, Comedy Central has divided the frequency with its sister program Nickelodeon and therefore transmits only between 8:15pm and 5:45am. Viacom already held a similar designed program window named NICK Comedy from 2005 to 2006, which was discontinued in favor of Comedy Central Germany. Until 1 January 2009 there was a simulcast broadcast of the program on the own and on the shared frequency. Thereafter, until 17 January 2009 at the old time slot, an alternative program scheme was spread before it was briefly replaced by a loop with program notes. During this time, the cable operators have been able to coordinate the frequencies in favor of the new mixed program. From 25 July 2009 to 13 October 2010, Comedy Central used the slogan "TV und lustig" (TV and funny). With this claim, Comedy Central accompanied the viewers through the program. Then the claim was "Enjoy Daily" and was in use by 1 October 2011. Since 1 March 2010 Comedy Central Germany has broadcast only in 16:9 format, with the exception of programs that have been or are produced in 4:3 (American Dad, Roseanne, Comedy Street, Genial Daneben, etc.) On 1 October 2011, the station design was adapted to the new international design used by Comedy Central. Early 2012, the image format of old 4:3 programs were adapted, they are now - as from the beginning to the HD version - scaled to 14:9 format, thus parts of the image at the top and bottom are lost. Since mid-2012, opening credits of most shows are often omitted, the transmission time of a program has thus not changed, it has been adapted to the length of the advertising blocks. Since 29 September 2012, the website is no longer accessible via comedycentral.de. The domain redirected to the new station's website, comedycentral.tv.

Since 8 September 2014 Comedy Central airs between 5 pm and 6 am. In the time between 6 am and 5 pm the program of VIVA Germany is shown. Until October 2014 there was a simulcast broadcast of the program on the shared frequency with Nickelodeon (8.15 pm to 5.45 am) and on the VIVA-frequency (5 pm to 6 am).[1][2]

Comedy Central Austria

The Austrian equivalent was launched on 1 January 2011. The Programming is, aside from the commercials and promotions, practically the same as the German version. It replaced VIVA Austria's time slot on its shared frequency with Nickelodeon Austria, because the new overhauled VIVA replaced the de facto cancelled Austrian MTV, which became MTV Germany (Pay-TV).

Since 8 September 2014 Comedy Central also airs between 5 pm and 6 am. In the time between 6 am and 5 pm the program of VIVA is shown. Until October 2014 there was a simulcast broadcast of the program on the shared frequency with Nickelodeon (8.15 pm to 5.45 am) and on the VIVA-frequency (5 pm to 6 am).[3][4]

Comedy Central Switzerland

In Switzerland, the regional spin-off of Comedy Central Germany was launched on 16 May 2011. Aside from commercials, Comedy Central Switzerlands main difference from its German counterpart is the shorter On-Air time, which ends at 05:00 (CET) due to the early start of Nickelodeon Switzerland. Like in Austria, Comedy Central replaced the cancelled Swiss VIVA time slot, whose regional content got more and more transferred to, free-to-air remaining, MTV Switzerland the preceding months. Nevertheless, Viacom announced on 28 September 2012 that VIVA Switzerland would be relaunched on 1 October as a full 24 hour channel.

Since 8 September 2014 Comedy Central also airs between 5 pm and 6 am. In the time between 6 am and 5 pm the program of VIVA will is shown. Until October 2014 there was a simulcast broadcast of the program on the shared frequency with Nickelodeon (8.15 pm to 5.45 am) and on the VIVA-frequency (5 pm to 6 am).[5][6]

Since 16 May 2011 the German HD version of Comedy Central started in the network of Telekom and Vodafone TV.[7] Later, at the 11 June 2011, the high definition broadcasting starts on satellite via HD+.
