Daniel Gwyther (born 29 March 1986) is an English professional footballer who currently plays for the Long Island Rough Riders of the United Soccer Leagues. He can play as defender or midfielder. He has previously played for Fulham, Barnet, Watford, SUNY Buffalo, University of Cambridge, Mosta, Metropolitan Police, and New York Atlas.[1]

Playing career

Early career

As a youth Gwyther attended Fulham's school of excellence. After leaving high school Gwyther began his career at Barnet representing their under 19's from 2002-2004. In summer 2004 he signed professionally,[2] and was named to the first team squad for the opening game of the 2004/05 season against Farnborough as an 18-year-old.[3] Drawing considerable attention, Watford subsequently signed him[4][5] for the remainder of the campaign.[6][7] At the conclusion of the 2004/05 season Gwyther was released and rejoined Barnet for their 2005/06 preseason preparations.[8] However, after receiving an offer from John Astudillo the Head Coach of the The State University of New York at Buffalo, Gwyther opted to head across the Atlantic to continue his career.

United States

Gwyther played for the Buffalo Bulls from 2005-2009, leading the team to their most successful 4-year period in school history. In his four-year career, Gwyther was a 2-year captain and played in 75 games, starting all but one, scoring seven goals and six assists. During this time the Bulls enjoyed their first National Ranking[9] and made it to the Mid-American Conference tournament finals in 2005 and 2007. He finished the 2008 campaign second on the team in scoring with 11 points, netting four goals and three assists in 20 games. For his efforts on the field Gwyther was twice named to the All-MAC regular season and All-MAC tournament teams.[10][11][12] After exhausting his playing eligibility Gwyther entered into the 2009 MLS SuperDraft.[13] and was invited to train with D.C. United[14] of Major League Soccer and the Rochester Rhinos.

Cambridge, Mosta, & Metropolitan Police

After graduating with his degree Gwyther returned to the U.K and undertook his Masters at the University of Cambridge where he played for the University's football team[15] under Che Wilson. He earned full Blue honours by playing in the 2010 Varsity match[16] against Oxford University A.F.C. at Cambridge United's Abbey Stadium.[17] During his time at Cambridge, Gwyther spent time with Mosta F.C. of the Maltese Premier League. However he chose to return to school and complete his studies. After leaving Cambridge, Gwyther was signed by the Metropolitan Police F.C. for the 2010/11 season[18] and was part of the squad that won the Isthmian Division One South.[19] He re-signed for the club for the 2011/12 season for their first season in the Isthmian Premier Division, scoring his first goal for the club against Concord Rangers[20]

Long Island Rough Riders & New York Atlas

After the conclusion of the English season, Gwyther returned to the U.S and signed with the Long Island Rough Riders. Due to the nature of the American system Gwyther signed with the New York Atlas during the USL offseason, leading the club to back to back U.S National Cup Final Appearances in 2012 and 2013 as well as qualifying for the U.S Open Cup.[21] He scored his first goal for the club against the Hicksville All-Stars in the 2nd round of the U.S National Cup.[22] In 2014 New York Atlas reached the 3rd round of the 2014 U.S Open cup before falling to Richmond Kickers.[23] For the third straight year the club qualified for the U.S National Cup Final Four after beating Maryland Bays in the Eastern Region Final.[24] Atlas would go on to win the National Cup for the first time in their history after securing a 4-2 victory.[25]

New York Athletic Club

After three years with Atlas,[26] Gwyther signed with perennial National Premier Soccer League power New York Athletic Club[27]

Coaching career

In July 2013, Gwyther was named the assistant coach for SUNY Maritime College men's soccer team.[28] In July 2014 Gwyther took over as the Head Coach of Maritime.[29] After a successful first season, Gwyther was linked with the St. Bonaventure University Head Coaching position.[30]
