Daniel Steres (born November 11, 1990) is an American professional soccer player who plays for the LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer as a defender.

Career

College and amateur

He started playing soccer when he joined an U-11 team in Dallas. He played with the same team from U-11 to U-19.[1] He played four years for Calabasas High School.[2] He twice was a Maramonte League selection and was all-California Interscholastic Federation.[2] He was a three-time member of the Jewish Community Center (JCC) Maccabi U.S. championship team.[2]

He played four years of college soccer at San Diego State University between 2008 and 2011.[3] In 2009 he was All-Pac-10 (Honorable Mention), Pac-10 All-Academic Team (Honorable Mention), and in 2010 he was All-Pac-10 (Second Team).[2] Steres is Jewish, and was named the Jewish Sports Review's 2010 Men's All-America College Soccer Team.[4]

Professional

Steres was drafted 28th in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft by Chivas USA, but didn't earn a contact with the team.[5] He was selected by Seattle Sounders FC in the 2012 MLS Waiver Draft and signed with the club on June 23, 2012, and mostly played at center back for the team.[6][7]

In 2013 with the Wilmington Hammerheads, he led the team in goals with seven, and had three assists.[8] He received the team's Most Valuable Player award and was named to the 2013 USL PRO All-League Second Team.[8] In the 2014 season, Steres signed for LA Galaxy II and in the following season, he was named captain,[1] and leading the Galaxy to their first USL Championship final. During the two seasons he was with LA Galaxy II, Steres was named Defender of the Year in both seasons.[9]

After two seasons with LA Galaxy's reserve team, he was rewarded with a first-team contract on December 17, 2015.[10] Steres scored in his debut against DC United on a corner kick from Mike Magee, he goal started a come-from-behind win.[11]

Personal life

Daniel Steres is born in Burbank, California, to Suzie and Mark Steres.[2] He is Jewish, and part of the Jewish Community Center (JCC) Macabi Championship Team member. He is known to be a fan of the London team Tottenham Hotspur. As a youngster, he looked up to his favorite player, Cobi Jones.[1]
