David Lauren (born October 11, 1971) is the middle child and youngest son of clothing designer Ralph Lauren. He has two siblings: Dylan and Andrew Lauren.[1]

Early life

David Lauren was born on October 11, 1971, the son of Ricky Anne Loew-Beer and fashion designer and executive Ralph Lauren.[2] His father was the son of Belarus-born Jewish immigrants. His mother was the daughter of Austrian immigrants.[3][4] The second of three children, David has an older brother, Andrew Lauren, and a younger sister, Dylan Lauren.

Lauren attended Duke University, where he studied Political Science.[5] At Duke, he founded Swing, a general interest lifestyle publication for Generation X, where he served as President and Editor-In-Chief. Swing was eventually published by Hachette Filipacchi Médias.[5][6]

Career

Lauren is currently Chief Innovation Officer and Vice Chairman at Ralph Lauren Corporation, a position he has held since October 2016. In his role at Ralph Lauren Corporation, Lauren is responsible in leading company efforts to create new initiatives that help drive the Ralph Lauren brand across all channels.[7]

Lauren joined Ralph Lauren Corporation in 2000 to run the company's internet operations under Ralph Lauren Media, LLC., a division he established in collaboration with NBC. That year, David launched the luxury industry's first e-commerce site, created Ralph Lauren Magazine, an online publication with original articles, and Ralph Lauren TV, an original web channel covering fashion, design, and sports, and featuring celebrity interviews, all under an idea he called "merchan-tainment," a seamless combination of merchandising and entertainment.[8]

David has been a driving force behind several groundbreaking creative partnerships and initiatives, as well as the brand's expansion overseas. In 2007, Lauren orchestrated a number of initiatives spanning the year in celebration of Ralph Lauren's 40th anniversary. That year, David Lauren was named DNR's "Marketer of the Year." In 2007, he was named DNR's "Marketer of the Year."[9]

In 2009, David created the "Make Your Own" iPhone app for Rugby Ralph Lauren and presents the first-ever, online-only fashion show for the brand. For the first time ever, consumers are allowed to shop the looks in real time. "Ralph Lauren was the first luxury company to build smartphone applications with mobile-tagging capabilities." Says Marie Driscoll of Standard & Poor's Equity Research.[10]

In 2010, Lauren debuted a 4-D Light Projection, to celebrate the launch of Ralph Lauren e-commerce in the U.K. on the façade of its flagship stores on New Bond Street in London and at 888 Madison Avenue in New York. That fall, David Lauren and his team introduced a childrenswear collection with an online shoppable storybook called The RL Gang: An Absolutely Awesome School Adventure. The new interactive retail format featuring live-action video of kids in Ralph Lauren ensembles, allows for purchasing as the story progresses.[11]

In April 2011, David led a series of opening events in support of the Ralph Lauren Car Exhibition – L’Arte de Automobile – at Les Artes Decoratifs in Paris. In October 2013, Ralph Lauren celebrated his underwriting of the restoration of the splendid amphitheater of the École des Beaux-Arts—and to present his first-ever runway show in the City of Lights.[12] On October 15, 2013, David Lauren presents The Dog Walk, a digital 3-D image platform showcasing the Ralph Lauren Fall 2013 Accessories Collection in collaboration with the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) on RalphLauren.com.[13] To celebrate Ralph Lauren's philanthropic partnership with The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, David Lauren orchestrated a dinner at Windsor Castle in May 2014, hosted by the president of The Royal Marsden, HRH The Duke of Cambridge.[14]

In September 2014, Ralph Lauren's new Polo line for women presented its Spring 2015 collection during New York Fashion Week in a revolutionary runway event: a water-screen projection using four-story-tall holographic effects in Manhattan's Central Park. The event also celebrated the grand opening of the Polo flagship store on Fifth Avenue. In 2014, Forbes listed David Lauren as the second most influential CMO in the world.

Lauren orchestrated the company's sponsorship of several international sporting events and teams, including Wimbledon, U.S. Open, and U.S. Olympic teams. Lauren introduced Legends Tennis Clinic in 2010, two live, online tennis clinics during Wimbledon and the U.S. Open enabling tennis enthusiasts around the world to ask questions in real time to Boris Becker (during Wimbledon) and Venus Williams (during U.S. Open).[15] On Opening day of U.S. Open Tennis in 2015, David Lauren introduced PoloTech™, the first wearable tech shirt accurately reading advanced biometrics. The brand dressed several ball boys in the PoloTech™ shirt, and Marcos Giron, the No. 1 singles player in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, wore the PoloTech™ shirt during his practices.[16]

To celebrate the launch of Polo Sport, Ralph Lauren launched interactive holographic windows at its Polo flagship on 5th Avenue. Starting August 27, 2015, the Polo window display featured rotating vignettes of holograms demonstrating the tenets of Polo Sport and the comprehensive biometric capabilities of the new PoloTech™ wearable-technology shirt.[17] In January 2015, Ralph Lauren is proud to introduce The Polo Bar, his first restaurant in New York City. Since June 2015, global media coverage generated nearly 28 Billion impressions and close to $500 Million in estimated media value, with over 150 magazine covers and over 3,000 placements.[18]

David Lauren has been featured on the cover of Quest (2009), The Wag (2010) Fast Company (2011), The RAKE (2012), Mayfair Times (2012), MF Fashion Gentleman (2012), and HAMPTONS (2014).

Personal life

Lauren is a member of the Ralph Lauren Corporation Board of Directors and the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention,[19] Lauren also serves as president of the Polo Ralph Lauren Foundation, orchestrates Ralph Lauren Volunteers, which sends Ralph Lauren employees out on community service initiatives, and spearheaded the G.I.V.E. (Get Involved Volunteer Exceed) campaign to promote service in the community. [20]

In recent years, David has been the driving force behind several groundbreaking creative partnerships and initiatives. Most recently, David advanced the concept of fusing fashion and technology by launching POLO 4D, a revolutionary runway event in which a water-screen projection towered above Manhattan's Central Park. [21] David also pioneered wearable technology in fashion industry with the launch of groundbreaking PoloTech™ smartshirt, an innovative product that merges real-time biometric technology into active lifestyle apparel, and is designed to improve general wellness and increase personal fitness.[22]

He has also been instrumental in building the Company's global fashion image as it has expanded across China, Russia, Latin America and Europe. Forbes recently listed him as the second most influential CMO in the world.

Before joining Ralph Lauren, David was Editor In Chief and President of Swing, a general interest publication for Generation X.[23]

On September 4, 2011, Lauren married Lauren Bush, the granddaughter of former U.S. President George H. W. Bush.[24][25][26][27] Their son, James Richard Lauren, was born November 21, 2015.[28]
