Dune is a German group of techno, rave and happy hardcore founded in the early 1990s, originally from Munich. The band took its name from the Dune series of science fiction novels by Frank Herbert. The group has been a resounding success with songs like "Hardcore Vibes", "Are You Ready to Fly?" and "Rainbow to the Stars".
History
The group was founded in 1995 by disc jockey Olivier Froning and producers Jens Oettrich and Bernd Burhoff (alias Plutone). The band's name is inspired by the science fiction series featured in Frank Herbert's 1984 homonym film. They release their first single called "Hardcore Vibes", a cover of Rozalla's song "Are You Ready to Fly". The single reached the Swiss German and Dutch musical rankings in 1995. The trio subsequently joined the singer and dancer Verena von Strenge (alias Verena) in order to begin the composition of their homonym album recorded with the label Urban Records, featuring their hit title "Can not Stop Raving"; The title is originally an instrumental song from the album remixed with added vocoded voices, which will reach the top 10 of many European countries. An album entitled Expedicion follows the following year, in 1996 and includes songs like "Rainbow To The Stars", "Hand In Hand" or "Million Miles From Home". The latter will be in Germany the official anthem of the 30th anniversary of Star Trek.
In early 1997, Dune made a drastic change in musical style. Accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the band produced a cover of Queen's "Who Wants to Live Forever", reaching second place in the charts. They released a new album, Forever, with the cover of Phil Collins hit "Against All Odds", and Frankie Goes to Hollywood' s "The Power of Love"), but the band was in disagreement and Verena von Strenge left. She also releases singles like "Finally Alone" and "Heartbeat". Verena is replaced by Vanessa Hörster, at that time amateur singer. The single "Keep the Secret", released on April 20, 1998, marks the premiere of Vanessa. The video of the track "Electric Heaven" is directed by Eric Will and shot on the Côte d'Azur in France. In August 1998, Dune planned to release an album entitled 5, but its release is canceled as a result of the commercial failure of the titles "Electric Heaven" and "Keep the Secret". Their fifth album, Forever and Ever, was released on November 23, 1998, together with a new singer, Tina Lacebal. At the end of 1999, the relations between the group and the former singer Verena are settled. A surprise is waiting fans in the ferries: a new single of the name of "Dark Side Of The Moon" in the same style as the album Expedicion. However, the album Reunion that was to follow will never be produced.
Reunion and "Heaven" issues
When Verena von Strenge returned to Dune in late 1999, they recorded the single "Dark Side of the Moon", and began recording songs for an album titled Reunion. However, Dune recorded a cover of Avancada & Central Seven's 1999 hit "Piece of Heaven", changed the lyrics, and called it "Heaven". Dune incorrectly thought they had permission to produce the cover. The CD single and an LP vinyl release was made, and a music video, which played on VIVA TV in Germany. However, a week later, A7 put in a court order on the single "Heaven", saying it sounds like their single "Piece of Heaven". Dune was later forced to remove "Heaven", and they could not release their album Reunion due to the court order. The recorded singles, except for "Heaven", were released later on the album History.
