ESCP Europe (its initials standing for École supérieure de commerce de Paris) is a pan-European business school which has campuses in Berlin, London, Madrid, Paris, Turin, and Warsaw. Originally established in 1819 in Paris, it is the oldest business school in the world,[1] and considered by several international specialized newspapers ( Financial Times, QS,...) one of the best business schools in the World and in Europe (among the top 10).[2]

ESCP Europe is one of the most selective French "Grandes écoles" and referred in France as one of the "trois Parisiennes" [3] (three Parisians). It is highly selective and aims to prepare high-level students for top executive functions.

The ESCP Master in Management is consistently regarded by the Financial Times as one of the best in the world (in 2010 the Financial Times ranked it first in the world). In addition, the Financial Times rankings placed ESCP's Master in Finance 2nd (2016) and its Executive MBA 12th (2016) worldwide. Accredited by the Paris Chamber of Commerce, ESCP Europe is one of the 64 schools in the world that has the triple accreditation of AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA.

History

Foundation in 1819

The school was established in Paris on 1 December 1819 as the world's first business school[4][5][6] by a group of economic scholars and businessmen including the well-known economist Jean-Baptiste Say and the celebrated trader Vital Roux. It was modeled on the first Grande École, the École Polytechnique founded by Lazare Carnot and Gaspard Monge, but was initially much more modest, mainly because it had not been supported by the state. It gradually gained in stature and importance during the 19th century and moved to its current Parisian location on Avenue de la République in 1898.

In 1828, the project to put the school under the authority of the French Ministry of Commerce and Industry failed. The school remained independent by the intervention of Jérôme-Adolphe Blanqui who took it over. Several times during the first half of the 19th century French politics planned on grouping ESCP Europe with French elite engineering schools such as École Polytechnique or École Centrale Paris but that never happened. From 1838, the French state began to give scholarships to ESCP Europe's students and in 1852 it accredited ESCP Europe's programs.

Finally, in 1869 the Paris Chamber of Commerce bought the school to train future business leaders to modern commercial methods. It is worth noting that until 1870 there was only one business school in France: ESCP Europe. In 1892, ESCP Europe set up selective admission processes which still take the form of competitive exams.

A paneuropean school since 1973

On April 5, 1973 the concept of a multi-campus business school was founded with the consecutive inaugurations of campuses in the United Kingdom (London in 1974, move to Oxford in 1975) and in Germany (Düsseldorf in 1975, move to Berlin in 1985). Since then, the school has deepened its European presence to become an integrated paneuropean business school:

ESCP Europe students have the opportunity to study in campuses in France[7] (Paris), in the UK (London), Spain (Madrid), Germany (Berlin), Italy (Turin), and Poland (Warsaw). They can spend either 6 months or 1 year on each campus according to their study choices. Each campus has its own specificities and develops programs with local academic institutions. For instance, in Spain ESCP Europe provides a Master in Business Project Management co-delivered with the Technical University of Madrid.

From 2017, ESCP Europe will have two campuses in Paris. One near the Place de la République (11th arrondissement of Paris) and another one near the Montparnasse Tower (15th arrondissement of Paris). Each campus will be dedicated to a specific range of programs. The campus in the 11th arrondissement will host all the graduate programs whereas the campus in the 15th arrondissement will host the undergraduate education, the executive education and the school's start-up Incubator. This organization is unique to Paris. In all the other school's cities, undergraduate, graduate and executive education are dispensed in the same campus.

Multiple degree awarding

Programs

Bachelor in Management (BSc)

The Bachelor in Management is an undergraduate programme that spans three years, three countries and three languages. It is a general management programme that combines management subjects (i.e. marketing, economics, law, finance) with training in languages, liberal arts/humanities and personal development.It is a Certified Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Management fully compliant with the Bologna process introduced by the European Union in 1999. Students spend their first year in London, their second year in either Madrid, Paris or Turin, and their third and final year in Berlin.

Master in Management (MiM) - Grande Ecole

Overview

The Master in Management is a two-year, pre-experience full-time general management Master programme which provides the opportunity to study in up to three countries, with options ranging from ESCP Europe's own six European campuses to approximately 70 partners worldwide. Designed for students with bachelor's degrees (or equivalent) in any field of study (Master programme) or those without who have previously completed at least two years of university education (Pre-Master programme in preparation for the two-year MIM), it features more than 20 specialisations including finance, international business, marketing, sustainable development. In order to graduate students are required to have 10 months of internships.

Admission

The admission to the master is one of the most selective in France and in the World. The ESCP Master in Management is designed for candidates who have completed French preparatory classes after high school diploma and passed a very competitive entrance examination known as the concours, or have an international university degree (Bachelor or Master). In 2014, among more than 10 500 students enrolled in preparatory classes, 5943 applied to ESCP concours (considered as one of the most difficult), only 1000 were invited to oral examination and 350 were eventually admitted.[8] Around 3000 international candidates applied to the school for just 350 places (12% admitted). Students from classe préparatoire will basically spend 2 to 3 years after Baccalauréat only to prepare for the national entrance examination of Grandes Ecoles which includes a written part (lasting 3 weeks) as well as an oral part (1 to 4 days for each Grande Ecole). It is commonly considered as the most prestigious path after High School in France (only 5% of a generation will be admitted to a prépa and far less than 1% to HEC, ESCP and ESSEC). For international students is required the GMAT test and the range of score of admitted students is 670 - 750.

Placement

Students enrolled in the ESCP Europe MiM program usually once graduated work for top institutions in banking, consulting, strategy, marketing and communications. ESCP Europe is a target school of prestigious banks (Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan & Co., Lazard, etc.) and consulting firms (McKinsey & Company, The Boston Consulting Group, Bain & Company, etc. .). The latest annual employment survey shows that newly graduated students of ESCP Europe earn on average €53,346 and 83% found a job before the end of the master while 97% of university graduates looking for work has found a place within 6 months. 41.8% work outside of their home country. Immediately after the MiM, 31% and 21% of students ESCP Europe working in the field of consulting and finance, respectively.

According to a survey published by emolument in 2015, ESCP graduates who work as analysts in finance earn, on average, most of the graduates from, among others, University of Oxford and Cambridge (respectively €86,000 against €84,000 and €84,000 ). In France ESCP is part of the "trois parisiennes", a term used to describe the 3 best French business school (along with HEC and ESSEC). In 2015, the program was ranked 7th best in the world by the Financial Times, allowing the school to maintain his 1st place in Germany, Italy and Spain, and to consolidate 2nd place in the UK and a 3rd place in France with this program.

In French national rankings, ESCP ranks 3rd in France almost every time,[9] The choices made by French students clearly rank ESCP 3rd: in 2015, 330 students admitted to ESCP Paris chose HEC Paris (while 0 did the contrary), 220 students admitted to ESCP chose ESSEC (while 6 did the contrary).[10][11]

MBA in International Management (formerly the Masters in European Business)

The MBA in International Management is a one-year full-time postgraduate programme in general management with a strong cross-cultural perspective and with emphasis on a pragmatic approach to management. The programme is designed for graduates who have an undergraduate honours degree in any non-business discipline (i.e. law, engineering, sciences, humanities, medicine). Applicants should have at least three years of significant professional experience although sometimes candidates might be accepted with less work experience. All students are selected by means of their academic and professional credentials and the successful completion of an assessment center including various interviews and a verbal-logic test (GMAT or SHL Test). There is a strong international side to the course and in 2008/09, there were 39 different nationalities across the six campuses.

There are more than 20 full-time Specialised Masters on offer at ESCP Europe, accessible to holders of an approved first degree and subject to a competitive entrance exam. Altogether, there are about 700 students studying for these one-year Specialist master's degrees.

PhD Program

The purpose of the ESCP Europe Ph.D. program is to train research-active professors and high-level consultants in the field of Management Science. It is based on a "European degree course", jointly organized with several academic partners.

Executive MBA

The program lasts 18 months and is divided into 9 basic courses, 12 elective courses (among the 36 proposed and taught on the five campuses of the school) and 5 international seminars. About 130 people are selected each year for this program, ranked first in Italy and nineteenth in the world according to the 2008 ranking compiled by the Financial Times. In 2014, the Financial Times ranking for this program ESCP as a sixteenth in the world, eighth in Europe . In 2016 the Financial Times ranked ESCP 12th in the world, 7th in Europe.

Other Executive Programs

ESCP Europe also offers several intensive modules for executives (open enrollment programmes) and programmes adapted to the needs of specific companies and organisations. Open programmes invite participants from different companies to learn together in intensive modules ranging from a couple of days to a couple of weeks and covering a wide range of business topics such as business 2.0 or supply chain management. Customised programmes are exclusively designed according to the needs and preferences of a specific company.

European Business Schools

ESCP Europe is considered one of the leading business schools in the world. In 2006 the It was ranked 6th in Europe according to Financial Times and In the 2009 QS Global 200 Business Schools Report[12] the school was ranked 10th in Europe. In 2012, ESCP Europe was again ranked 10th amongst European business schools by Financial Times.[13] In 2015 the school is ranked 10th in Europe tied with Oxford Said school of Business. It does not offer an MBA program so it does not appear in the dedicated rankings.
