Evan Mehdi Fournier (born 29 October 1992)[1] is a French professional basketball player for the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played junior basketball at the French INSEP academy from 2007 to 2009.[2]

Early life

Fournier was born on 29 October 1992, in Saint-Maurice, a small suburb outside of Paris. He began loving basketball in 2002 thanks to the 2001–02 Sacramento Kings team that was defeated in the Conference Finals by the Los Angeles Lakers. Fournier wears the number 10 on his jersey in honor of then Sacramento King, Mike Bibby.[3]

Professional career

France (2009–2012)

In September 2009, Fournier signed a one-year deal with JSF Nanterre of the LNB Pro B. In June 2010, he signed a two-year deal Poitiers Basket 86 of the LNB Pro A.[4]

Denver Nuggets (2012–2014)

On 28 June 2012, Fournier was selected with the 20th overall pick by the Denver Nuggets in the 2012 NBA draft.[5] On 11 July 2012, he signed his rookie scale contract with the Nuggets.[6] He then joined the Nuggets for the 2012 NBA Summer League where he averaged 14.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.2 steals in five games.[7] He played sparingly in his rookie season as he managed just 38 regular season games in addition to four playoff games.[8]

In July 2013, Fournier re-joined the Nuggets for the 2013 NBA Summer League.[9] On 30 October 2013, the Nuggets exercised their third-year team option on Fournier's rookie scale contract, extending the contract through the 2014–15 season.[10] He went on to have a much better season in 2013–14 as he played in 76 games while averaging 8.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.[8]

During his time with the Nuggets, Fournier became the first, and to this date, only player to wear a #94 jersey in the NBA.[11]

Orlando Magic (2014–present)

On 26 June 2014, Fournier was traded, along with the draft rights to Roy Devyn Marble, to the Orlando Magic in exchange for Arron Afflalo.[12] On 26 October 2014, the Magic exercised their fourth-year team option on Fournier's rookie scale contract, extending the contract through the 2015–16 season.[13]

On 12 November 2014, Fournier scored a career-high 28 points on 8-of-14 shooting in a 97–95 win over the New York Knicks.[14] A year later, he topped his career high, setting a new mark with 30 points in a 103–94 win over the New Orleans Pelicans.[15] On 15 March 2016, Fournier matched his career high, scoring 30 points against the Denver Nuggets.[16] In 2015–16, Fournier had a career year in which he averaged personal highs in scoring (15.4 ppg), rebounding (2.8 rpg), assists (2.7 apg), steals (1.2 spg) and minutes (32.5 mpg). He led the team in scoring 19 times, had 24 20-point games and two 30-point games.[8]

On 7 July 2016, Fournier re-signed with the Magic on a five-year, $85 million contract.[17][18] In the Magic's season opener on 26 October 2016, Fournier scored a game-high 20 points in a 108–96 loss to the Miami Heat.[19]
