Early life

Gigi Hadid was born and raised in Los Angeles[3][7] to real estate developer Mohamed Hadid and former model Yolanda Hadid (née Van den Herik).[3] Her mother is a Dutch-born American, and her father is Palestinian-American.[8] Through her father she descends from Daher Al Omer, Prince of Nazareth and the Sheikh of Galilee.[9][10] Hadid has two younger siblings, Bella, who is also a model, and a brother, Anwar, who is also a model. She has two older half-sisters, Marielle and Alana, on her father's side.[11] Following her parents' divorce, her mother married music producer David Foster, through whom she has five stepsisters.[4] In 2013, Hadid graduated from Malibu High School, where she was captain of the varsity volleyball team as well as a competitive horseback rider.[12][13]

Following high school, she moved to New York City to focus on her studies and modeling career. Hadid studied at The New School[14] beginning fall 2013.[15]

Career

1997–2012: Early work with Guess

Hadid's modelling career began when she was two years old[16] after she was discovered by Paul Marciano, of Guess. She started modelling with Baby Guess before stopping to concentrate on school. Hadid eventually returned to modeling,in 2011.[17] She resumed working with Marciano, and was named the face of a Guess campaign in 2012. Hadid has shot three campaigns with Guess as an adult.[13][18]

2013–2014: Professional rise in New York

After moving to New York City and signing to IMG Models in 2013, Hadid made her New York Fashion Week debut in February 2014 walking for Desigual's show.[19][20] In the same month she got her break in high fashion as she covered CR Fashion Book.[21] On July 15, 2014, she starred alongside actor and model Patrick Schwarzenegger in fashion designer Tom Ford's Eyewear autumn/winter campaign.[22][23] She co-hosted the Daily Front Row's Fashion Media Awards that was held in New York City on September 5, 2014.[24] Hadid has also starred in campaigns for Tom Ford F/W 2014, Tom Ford Velvet Orchard Fragrance, Tom Ford Beauty 2014.

In January 2015, she was named the Daily Front Row's "Model of the Year".[5] Hadid appeared in the 2015 Pirelli calendar.[25] In January 2015, she was named a Maybelline brand ambassador.[26]

By May 2015, Hadid had walked for designers including Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Michael Kors, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Max Mara.[27] In December 2015, she made her first appearance in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.[28]

Hadid has appeared on magazine covers including Vogue (United States, Paris, Italy, Britain, Japan, Spain, Australia, Brazil, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, China), Schön!,[29] Numéro, W Magazine and Teen Vogue as well as WSJ Magazine, Elle Canada, Dazed and Harper's Bazaar (USA, Malaysia).[30][31][32] Hadid has also shot editorials for VMAN, Elle, Grazia, Cleo, Vogue,[3] Sports Illustrated, Paper magazine, Vanity Fair and V Magazine. She was on the cover of Galore magazine and Carine Roitfeld's CR Fashion Book in 2014.[33][34][35][36] In 2015, Hadid became the first ever model to cover the CR Fashion Book twice.[37] Hadid's sister Bella is also a model, and as of 2015 the two sisters have been featured together in some modelling appearances.[38] Hadid has also starred in campaigns for Guess, Versace , Balmain F/W 2015, Topshop, Max Mara and Stuart Weitzman. [39][40][41]

2016: Recent developments

In 2016, she has walked for Versace, Chanel, Elie Saab, Anna Sui, Miu Miu, Balmain, Diane Von Furstenberg, Tommy Hilfiger, Fenty x Puma, Isabel Marant and Giambattista Valli.[42][43][44][45] In 2016, Hadid starred in an interactive campaign including a commercial for the BMW M2.[46] She hosted the 2016 iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards in Toronto on June 19, 2016.[47] She co-designed a capsule collection with Tommy Hilfiger called Gigi by Tommy Hilfiger which was released in the fall of 2016 at New York Fashion Week.[48] Also in the fall of 2016, she designed a boot collection for Stuart Weitzman titled the Gigi Boot.[49]

On November 20, 2016, while cohosting the awards show with SNL alum Jay Pharoah, Hadid affected an accent, pouted her lips, and said, “I love my husband, President Barack Obama, and our children, Sasha and Malia.” The joke, which referenced Melania Trump’s plagiarism of Michelle Obama during her 2016 Republican National Convention speech, was criticized on social media, where many accused the supermodel of racism and bullying. Later on the Monday evening, Hadid tweeted a handwritten note clarifying her intentions. “I was honored to host the AMAs last night and to work with some of the most respected writers in the business,” Hadid wrote. “I removed or changed anything in the script that I felt took the joke too far, and whether or not you choose to see it, what remained was done in good humor and with no bad intent. I too have been the center of a nationally televised comedy skit that poked fun at my actions and was able to find the humor in it. I believe Melania understands show business and the way shows are written and run. I apologize to anyone that I offended and have only the best wishes for our country.”[50]

Personal life

Hadid was in a relationship with singer Cody Simpson from 2013 to May 2015.[51] Later on in 2015 she dated another singer, Joe Jonas, for five months.[52] In 2016, she has been dating singer Zayn Malik,[53] with whom she was featured together in a fashion spread for the May 2016 edition of Vogue.[54]
