Godwin Franco is a Roman Catholic Indian international footballer who has been a midfielder for Chenaiyin FC the current 2015 Indian Super League Champions . He is a current Indian Super League winner . He played for Kerala Blasters FC who finished 2nd in the 1st edition Indian Super League [1]
Career
Early career
Godwin Franco comes from the quaint village of Guirim, Goa and is a product of the Sesa Football Academy and prior to enrolling at Sesa, he played for the Assagao Anjuna Football Academy . Franco has played for the U-16, U-19 and U-21 football teams for his state Goa and captained Goa at the U-21 level and played for the India football team at 2006 Lusophony Games in Macau.
He started his professional career with Churchill Brothers with whom he played for two seasons before leaving to play a season for Fransa-Pax and then turning out for Sporting Goa for three seasons; all of whom were in India's premier league competition, the National Football league / I-League and situated in Goa.[2]
Pune
In 2009 Godwin joined Pune who had just gained promotion to the I-League and helped them finish 3rd in their debut season at the top level of Indian football, starting 23 times in the midfield.
Dempo
In 2010, Godwin joined Dempo, staying with them for 4 seasons. He won 9 trophies with Dempo including the I-League and the Aiff Super Cup . He played in the AFC Champions League qualifier vs Al Sadd, Qatar who were the AFC Champions League winners that season. He played in the AFC Cup for Dempo as well . Godwin was selected by former German Bundesliga champions Fortuna Düsseldorf , Germany, for a trial in November 2013, along with Nirmal Chhetri .
Kerala Blasters FC
On 22 July 2014, Godwin joined Kerala Blasters FC franchise for the newly formed Indian Super League. He helped Kerala Blasters FC finish 2nd place in the 1st Indian Super League.
Royal Wahingdoh FC
Godwin joined Royal Wahingdoh FC on loan from Kerala Blasters FC in February 2015 after the first five matches of Royal Wahingdoh FC in the I League and started every match playing an important role, including scoring two long range goals in helping Royal Wahingdoh finish 3rd in their debut season in the I League.
Chenaiyin FC
Godwin signed for Chenaiyin Fc for the 2nd Indian Super League during the open transfer period on May 15, 2015 . He helped Chenaiyin Fc win the 2015 Indian Super League . He is a current Indian Super League winner. He won the 2015 Indian Super League final in his home state Goa .
International
Godwin was also a part of the Indian Under-19 team in 2003 and a part of the India football team for the 2006 Lusophony Games. Godwin was also a part of the India national football team camp for the 2010 AFC Challenge Cup. He however could not play the tournament because of late player registration issues . Godwin was selected as a probable for the India national football team for the FIFA World Cup qualifiers .
