The Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology (GCECT), formerly known as College of Ceramic Technology (CCT), is a premier government funded academically autonomous institute, affiliated to the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (formerly known as West Bengal University of Technology) in Kolkata, India. GCECT stands one of the best engineering colleges in West Bengal (through state JEE,WBJEE)which have recently stepped into its 75th year of existence. The Platinum Jubilee of the college was celebrated on April 2016 with association of International Conferences, alumni meet, visit of eminent peoples etc.

It offers engineering courses in Ceramic Technology, Computer Science & Engineering and Information Technology. It has been upgraded to a UGC autonomous postgraduate institution. After gaining autonomy, it introduced M.Tech courses in Information Technology, apart from in Ceramics. It has been accredited to NAAC (Govt. of India) Grade 'A' with a score of 3.18 CGPA(on a scale of 4) on May 2015.

Administration

The college is under the Directorate of Technical Education, Government of West Bengal, which takes part in overall policy matters. The college has gained autonomy to deal with many financial matters. The overall management is guided by a ‘Governing Body’ consisting of eminent people from the industry and the Government, which is headed by an industrialist Shri. S. K. Ghosh who is an ex-student of the college. The college has gained the liberty to design and modify its syllabus, organize semester examinations and their evaluation and introduce special seminars.

History

It was established in 1941, by Professor Sasadhar Ray, a student of physicists, Satyendra Nath Bose and Kariamanickam Srinivasa Krishnan.

Admissions

Admission is through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) conducted by the West Bengal Joint Examination Admissions Board (WBJEEB). Lateral admissions are through the Joint Entrance Examination of Lateral Entry (JELET), also conducted by WBJEEB.

The college specializes in Ceramic Technology.

GCECT offers Four year undergraduate degree courses in the following three disciplines:

B.Tech in Ceramic Technology
B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering
B.Tech in Information Technology

and Two year postgraduate courses in the following two disciplines:

M.Tech in Ceramic Technology
M.Tech in Information Technology

The Ceramic Technology and Information Technology streams are National Board of Accreditation Accredited.^[1]
NAAC accredited grade A autonomous institution under WBUT.
The college is an IBM Software Centre of Excellence^[2]
Joint research project with IIT-Kharagpur- the development of jute reinforced concrete^[3]
Joint industrial project with TISCO- Comparative study of wear mechanism of MgO –Carbon, Al2O3-MgO-Carbon and Pitch bonded Dolomite Refractories in Steel Ladle Working Environment
Technical tie-up with foreign universities Like Penn State University, University of Florida and Western Michigan University.

Student life

The students union is an association of the students that acts as a focal point of the activities of the students. Elections are held to decide the office bearers of the group.
The college provides hostel facilities to male students with limited accommodation. The hostel is located just opposite the college campus.
There is a field in front of the main college building where the students play football, volleyball and cricket.
Gym facilities for boys and girls.
