The Granada metro (Metro de Granada in Spanish) is a light metro network under construction and scheduled to open in March 2017 in the city of Granada, Spain and its metropolitan area. Construction of the first line began in 2007.[1] It will cross Granada and cover the towns of Albolote, Maracena and Armilla, covering a 15.9 kilometre area,[2] with underground sections in central Granada and overground sections elsewhere.[3] In total, 83% of the metro will run overground with the remainder underground.[2]

The metro was initially planned to open in early 2012, and by May 2011, 73% had been completed.[1] However funding ran out as a result of the Spanish economic crisis,[3] with only 250 million of the estimated 502 million euros available. In 2012, the remaining funds were secured through a 260 million loan from the European Investment Bank.[2] and the planned date of completion was moved to early 2014.[2] However, further delays resulted in a shortfall in funding, which was resolved on 1 July 2014, with the metro now scheduled to open in March 2017.[4]
