Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash (灰と幻想のグリムガル Hai to Gensō no Gurimugaru) is a Japanese light novel series written by Ao Jūmonji and illustrated by Eiri Shirai. The story follows a group of people who suddenly find themselves in a fantasy world with no memories from before their arrival, and chronicles their struggles to survive and make a life for themselves.

Mutsumi Okubashi began serializing a manga adaptation in Gangan Joker in 2015. The novels were adapted into a 12-episode anime television series that ran from January to March 2016. An original video animation was released in March 2016. The anime is licensed in North America by Funimation, while J-Novel Club has acquired the rights to publish the original novels in English and Yen Press publishes the manga adaptation.

Characters

Main characters

Haruhiro (ハルヒロ Haruhiro)
Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya (Japanese); Ricco Fajardo (English)[4][5]
The main viewpoint character and Thief of the group. Haruhiro is the most well-rounded character of the series as he is neither arrogant in his nature nor humble. He is generally helpful and always willing to help out his party members. He is later forced to become the group's leader after Manato's death because of this very fact. Eventually he starts to pay more attention to his teammates feelings, slowly improving as leader.
Yume (ユメ Yume)
Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu (Japanese); Jeannie Tirado (English)[4][5]
Brave and energetic, Yume is the hunter of the group. She also has a tendency to try and protect Shihoru because of her shy and timid nature. She has a good friendship with Haruhiro and they seem to get along well.
Shihoru (シホル Shihoru)
Voiced by: Haruka Terui (Japanese); Sarah Wiedenheft (English)[4][5]
The mage of the group. She is shy, only opening up to Yume and, to an extent, Manato before the latter's death. Yume is constantly trying to get her to interact more with the group.
Ranta (ランタ Ranta)
Voiced by: Hiroyuki Yoshino (Japanese); Orion Pitts (English)[4][5]
The Dark Knight of the group. He is brash, impulsive, and somewhat perverted, which leads him to constantly arguing with Haruhiro. Ranta is the troublemaker of the group constantly causing problems and making rash decisions for he has a slight hint of arrogance in his character.
Mary (メリイ Merii)
Voiced by: Chika Anzai (Japanese); Jād Saxton (English)[4]
Joining shortly after Manato's death, Mary effectively replaces him as the Priest of the party. Initially, there is a lot of friction between Mary and the rest of the team. She was actually a lot like Manato, but after a tragic incident that led to the death of some of her friends, she became cold and aloof, but after Haruhiro tells her about their own situation, she slowly opens to her new party.
Kuzaku (クザク Kuzaku)
The Paladin of the group who joins after Moguzo dies.
Manato (マナト Manato)
Voiced by: Nobunaga Shimazaki (Japanese); Justin Briner (English)[4][5]
Manato chose to become a Priest and ultimately assumed the role of the group's initial leader. He saw the positives in people and with that he was able to effectively strategize battle plans when the group began hunting goblins for the first time. As they progressed as a team, they began mapping out abandoned towns while hunting bigger goblin parties. However, while resting the group was ambushed by more goblins than they were accustomed to. Effectively moving his party to retreat, a goblin archer was able to successfully hit Manato square in the back as they ran away successfully. He died soon after. In a conversation after his death, Haruhiro mentioned that aside from missing his leadership and strategist plans, Manato was also a defensive tank like Moguzo and a front line attacker like Ranta.
Moguzo (モグゾー Moguzō)
Voiced by: Fukushi Ochiai (Japanese); Jarrod Greene (English)[4][5]
Moguzo is the tallest and heaviest member of the group and hence chose to become a member of the Warrior guild. He wears the most iron clad armor and wields a wide blade broadsword the comes up to shoulder height. Although he is the most physically imposing, ironically he challenges Shihoru for being the most soft spoken. On several occasions he will allow his friends to sleep in and will take their turn at cooking breakfast in the morning. He somewhat remembers doing this before and finding joy out of it. He also would carve wooden figurines of noteworthy quality in his spare time.

Manga

A manga adaptation by Mutsumi Okubashi began serialization in Square Enix's magazine Gangan Joker on 22 April 2015.[1][17] North Amercian publisher Yen Press announced their aquisition of the manga on 23 November 2016.[18]

Anime

An anime television series was written and directed by Ryosuke Nakamura and produced by A-1 Pictures. Mieko Hosoi acted as character designer.[1] Both the opening theme song, "Knew day", and the ending theme, "Harvest", were performed by (K)NoW_NAME. The series began broadcasting on AT-X, Tokyo Metropolitan Television, Nippon BS Broadcasting, and the Asahi Broadcasting Corporation on 11 January 2016.[lower-alpha 1][21] Funimation acquired the rights to simulcast the series with an English dub in North America.[22] The anime is listed with 6 Blu-ray and DVD volumes containing 2 episodes each, having a total of 12 episodes.[23]

2 "Long Day of the Trainee Volunteer Soldier"

Haruhiro and his friends decide to become Trainee Volunteer Soldiers in earnest but struggle to survive as they are untrained and have yet to fully adopt the kill or be killed attitude of the other parties. 
3 "Are Goblin Pouches Filled with our Dreams?"

Haruhiro and his friends continue to hunt goblins and gradually become used to their new world and learn to fight as a unit. They are finally able to buy new clothing with the money that they have earned. 
4 "Sky Dancing with Ash"

Becoming more confident, the group starts to hunt goblins in larger numbers, but when they encounter a group too powerful for them to defeat they retreat. As they flee, Manato takes an arrow to the back and, having exhausted his healing powers earlier, he collapses. The rest of the group rush to return Manato to town and are devastated when they find that he has died and cannot be brought back. 
5 "Crying Doesn't Mean You're Weak. Enduring Doesn't Mean You're Strong."

The group is despondent after Manato's death and funeral. The boys decide that they cannot proceed without a priest in the party and, with Haruhiro acting as spokesman, recruit Mary. She, however, proves to be a sullen, taciturn person who rubs everyone in the group the wrong way. How will they function if they cannot fully accept one another? 
6 "Her Circumstances"

Haruhiro and Yume discuss Mary's coldness and convince the rest of the group to try to make Mary welcome, leading to internal disagreement. Haruhiro's attempts to get Mary to open up are rebuffed and he asks a former comrade of hers about her attitude. It is revealed that her cold demeanour is due to the loss of her friends: she, like Manato before her, healed every little scrape that her party had suffered and so, when the others really needed healing, her magic was depleted and they died. 
7 "They Were Called Goblin Slayers"
"Goburin Sureiyā to Yobarete" (ゴブリンスレイヤーと呼ばれて) 		Minami Seki

Having learned of Mary's past (and how similar it is to what they have experienced with Manato), Haruhiro and the group decide to continue befriending Mary, although some of them are still unsure if it's possible. After a failed attempt to kill a goblin, Haruhiro tells Mary about Manato and explains that it's hard to survive without a priest. As they continue to adventure, the group learns new skills and Mary slowly starts to interact more with the group. 
8 "In My Memories with You"
"Kimi to no Omoide ni" (君との思い出に) 		29 February 2016[31]
As the group continues to hunt goblins, they resolve to not let any more friends die. Having improved their skills, the party decides to hunt the group of goblins who killed Manato. It is a tough battle against clever opponents, but the party succeeds and is able to earn enough money to buy their Volunteer Soldier badges, including one for the fallen Manato which they leave at his grave. 
9 "How to Rest"

Haruhiro and the group take a day off. During dinner, Haruhiro suggests that they change hunting grounds to the Siren Caves, citing increased goblin activity at their present hunting area. Mary, surprised by this, excuses herself and leaves because it is in those mines that she lost her friends to a particularly large and savage kobold named Death Spot. Despite their misgivings and Mary's obvious emotional baggage, they are determined to try it. During a training session with Barbara, Haruhiro asks her about the streaks of light that he has seen while fighting, which seem to show him how and where to strike. 
10 "I'm Not Fit to Be a Leader"

Haruhiro and the gang reach Siren Mines and defeat a few kobolds as they work their deeper into the caves. Haruhiro has doubts about his ability to act as their leader. The next day, Ranta's recklessness during another kobold fight almost injures Haruhiro. When they reach the kobold's farm land, they see Death Spot and Ranta accidentally sets off an alarm. 
11 "Between Life and Death"

The sight of Death Spot has paralyzed Mary and we see a flashback of her previous encounter with the giant kobold. When she snaps out of it, she leads the party away, since they would be at a disadvantage in the open field. They stop for a rest in the ruins of a temple. As it turns out, this is where Mary previously encountered Death Spot and her friends died. The party's rest is interrupted by three undead - the reanimated corpses of Mary's friends whose bodies were not cremated. The group manage to fend off the undead long enough for Mary to purify them. Their relief is short-lived as Death Spot appears, forcing them to flee. The party is chased through the caverns and narrowly manages to escape, although Ranta is cutoff and left behind. 
12 "See You Tomorrow..."
"Mata, Ashita..." (また、明日――) 		Mieko Hosoi28 March 2016[35]
Ranta manages to escape Death Spot and eventually reunites with the others. They attempt to flee to the surface but Death Spot follows them and blocks the way out. Haruhiro decides to sacrifice himself to give the others a chance to flee. As he faces Death Spot, Haruhiro accepts that he will die but is determined to fight until that moment. In that calm state he suddenly sees the lights that he told Barbara about and proceeds to fight and defeat Death Spot before losing consciousness. When he wakes up, Haruhiro finds himself safe at home and fully healed thanks to the others returning for him. The others are overjoyed that he is up and now have to decide what they will do with the 30 gold bounty that they earned for killing Death Spot. 

OVA

A 10-minute original video animation numbered "episode 2.5" was bundled with the first Blu-ray and DVD volume of the anime, which was released on 16 March 2016.[36] Toho streamed a promotional video for the OVA on 5 April 2016.[37]
