Grupa Azoty S.A. (before Zakłady Azotowe in Tarnów-Mościce) - the company in the chemical industry located in the Mościce district of Tarnów, in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship of southeastern Poland.

The company was established in 1927, during the Second Polish Republic period, as one of the most modern factories in Europe then.

Production

In the present day it the largest chemical holding company in Poland. It is also a leading chemicals company in Europe, where it is the second largest producer of mineral fertilizers and melamine, the third largest producer of compound fertilizers, and the fifth largest producer of plasticisers and polyamide 6.

Grupa Azoty (formerly: Zakłady Azotowe in Tarnów-Mościce S.A.) forms a Capital Group, affiliating, inter alia, the following subsidiaries:

Production

Grupa Azoty is currently the second largest producer of mineral fertilizers and third of compound fertilizers in European Union.[2] It is also present in the sector of construction plastics, OXO alcohols and plasticizers.[3] It offers a rich range of products made in particular plants in Tarnów, Puławy, Kędzierzyn-Koźle and Police, Gdańsk, Grzybów, Chorzów i Guben.[4]

Main fields of operation

Mineral fertilizers are one of the most important fields of operation of Grupa Azoty. It specialises in production of nitric and compound fertilizers.[5] Additionally, in Agro segment, the company deals with ammonia production and other half-products produced on the basis of nitrogen. What is more, Grupa Azoty performs a project of phosphorite excavation (the main material in compound fertilizer production) in its own mine in Senegal. Grupa Azoty is the leader on the Polish market and second largest producer of mineral fertilizers European Union.

In the scope of this segment, most of all, engineering plastics (polyamide 6 (PA6) and modified plastics) are produced as well as auxiliary products such as caprolactam and other chemicals. Currently, the largest factory of Polyamide 6 in Tarnów is under construction, which will allow Grupa Azoty to increase its production possibilities and become the leading producer of this material in Europe.[6]

The next field of activity of Grupa Azoty is Chemistry, focusing: OXO products, urea, melamine and sulphur. Grupa Azoty is the third producers of melamine in the world and second in the European Union.[7] Whereas, in OXO products, Grupa Azoty is the only one in Poland and seventh in Europe in terms of OXO alcohol production as well as the largest national and fifth European company producing plasticisers.[8]

Electric power and heat produced in the Power Engineering Segment are sold locally, in the direct surroundings of the Companies. A major power engineering segment are companies of Grupa Azoty. The companies of Grupa Azoty have their own distribution networks for power engineering utilities and energy. Currently, construction plans of new heat-power blocks are performed in the premises of plants in Kędzierzyn and Puławy.[9]

Research and development

In the scope of concluded agreement, Grupa Azoty will cooperate with AGH University of Science and Technology in the field of development of pure coal technologies and their implementation on the industrial scale in Poland. The jointly conducted projects, among others, concern the research and coal preparation for gasification, its application in chemical processes, development of technologies for using slags and dusts produced in the coal gasification process or processing, energetic and emissive conditions that are in line with requirements of the European Union.[10] In addition to AGH, Grupa Azoty cooperates with Tauron and KGHM in the project, with which the letters of intent on this matter were signed.[11]

In 2013 in Zakłady Azotowe Chorzów (belonging to Grupa Azoty PULAWY), the first in Poland installation for stearin production, producing ca. 13.2 tons per year, was commissioned.[12]

In 2013, Grupa Azoty POLICE purchased 55% of shares in the company African Investment Group, which allowed the Polish concern to access the raw material deposits in Senegal: ilmenite sand deposits Sud Saint Louis and calcium phosphate deposits in the Lam Lam and Kebemer region.[13] In addition to the purchase of the mines, Grupa Azoty plans to start production of phosphoric acid in Senegal.[14]

Grupa Azoty in cooperation with Lotos prepared the feasibility study of a new petrochemical complex in Gdańsk (project performance was delayed in time due to other priorities of both companies).[15]

Grupa Azoty started cooperation with Synthos, the commercial exchanged between Synthos and Zakłady Azotowe in Chorzów was settled within the scope of the agreement. Grupa Azoty started cooperation with Pfleiderer Grajewo company, a producer of materials based on wood.[16]

KGHM started research in the region of Puck Bay, the aim of which is examination of potassium-magnesium salt and rock-salt deposits.[17] KGHM plans to exploit potassium-magnesium deposits jointly with Grupa Azoty. It is estimated that the by means of deposit exploitation in the Puck region, it is possible to obtain 600 million tons of material with potassium oxide content from 7 to 13.7 percent.[18]

PZU S.A. with Grupa Azoty will support small, innovative companies both in the scope of scientific research and its subsequent commercialisation.[19]

The contract for transport of chemicals, containers and other goods to companies in Grupa Azoty was concluded on 16 October 2014.[20]

Grupa Azoty (and particular plants incorporated in the concern) organises student internships, meetings with graduates and conducts research with higher schools and scientific institutes from all the country.[21][22][23][24]

In September 2015 Grupa Azoty was admitted to Chatham House seated in London,[25] gathering over 300 companies, representing the sectors: financial, industrial, health, energetic, telecommunication and commercial as well as the most important embassies, international organisations and universities. Grupa Azoty is the first Institute's partner from Middle-Eastern Europe.[26]

"Ground is Knowledge" - under this phrase and in cooperation with PKO Bank Polski, Grupa Azoty commenced nationwide 3-year program of tests of soil Ph and soil richness in nutritional elements.[27] In the scope of the campaign, the companies intend to reach nearly 2 thousand agricultural households in the entire country and test 28 thousand samples in cooperation with the Regional Chemical-Agricultural Stations.[28]

On 12 March 2015 the activity of the Centre for Rescue Education of Grupa Azoty (CERGA) was commenced. It is a modern unit responsible for periodical and specialist training of firefighters and chemical paramedics working in Grupa Azoty. Its activity includes all companies affiliated in Grupa Azoty and other entities interested in taking advantage of the training offer. The aim of establishing CERGA was to support the development of common norms in the scope of fire safety and emergency services as well as the exchange of experiences between paramedic units.[29]

Grupa Azoty have been noted in the RESPECT Index kept by the Warsaw Stock Exchange continuously since 19 November 2009.[30] This project aims to distinguish companies that are managed responsibly and sustainably and, in addition, significantly highlights the innovative attractiveness of companies which is characteristic of, e.g. reporting quality, level of investor relationships and information order.[31] The choice of companies for the index is conducted according to a three-stage process. GPW analyses the financial matters, strategy and principles of organisation management, environmental factors, employment policy and relations with employees as well as the influence on the market. Grupa Azoty has been continuously publicly traded in the Respect Index for 9 years.[32]

Investments

In 2014-2020, the concern plans investments within the scope of: ammonia production, mechanical granulation, solution of urea ammonium nitrate, phosphoric acid production, polyamide and plasticisers. This will involve 68 investment projects for the amount of PLN 7 billion.[33][34]

Grupa Azoty is highly involved in the life of local community in Tarnów, supporting, e.g. the cultural enterprises: musical festival Grupa Azoty Jazz Contest Tarnów,[43] Grupa Azoty Grand Festival[44] or New Year Charity Concert of Grupa Azoty in Lusławice,[45] film festival "Tarnów Film Award",[46] Comedy Festival "Talia" as well as ArtFest Art Festival. Grupa Azoty is involved in organising Investment Forum in Tarnów which is a part of Economic Forum in Krynica.[47] In addition, it cooperates with Tarnów authorities in the scope of town development, co-finances road and ring road construction and incinerating plant.[48][49]

Supporting sport

Grupa Azoty supports multiple sports disciplines: cinder club Unia Tarnów,[50] football club Pogoń Szczecin,[51] female volleyball club Chemik Police,[52] male volleyball club ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle[53] and handball players from Azoty Puławy.[54] So far, the concern has supported such sports people as Robert Kubica (WRC),[55] Piotr Zyła (ski-jumping),[56] Justyna Wałaś (boxing),[57] Klaudia Buczek,[58] Marcin Dzieński, Edya Ropek, Michał Derus, Renata Knapik (sports climbing).[59] Grupa Azoty is also the main partner of Polish Skiing Association.[60]

Grupa Azoty commenced the program Grupa Azoty Start,[61] by means of which, it supports sports development of children and the youth (establishes the cooperation with cinder school UKS Jaskółki, Interschool Sports Club Pałac Młodzieży Tarnów, MUKS 1811 Tarnów and the development of Polish cross-country skiing.[62]
