List of hardcore punk bands

Black Flag performing in 1984. Michael Azerrad, author of Our Band Could Be Your Life, calls Black Flag the "godfathers" of hardcore punk and "required listening".[1] Steven Blush states that Black Flag defined American hardcore in the same way that the Sex Pistols defined punk.[2]

This is a list of notable bands considered to be hardcore punk. Hardcore punk (sometimes referred to simply as hardcore) is an underground music genre that originated in the late 1970s, following the mainstream success of punk rock. Hardcore is generally faster, thicker, more aggressive and heavier than earlier punk rock.
