HotelTonight is a mobile travel app for iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows devices that allows users to find discounted hotel accommodations up to seven days in advance throughout the Americas, Europe and Australia.[1][2][3][4] Due to the last minute nature of the bookings, the app can offer deep discounts off the listed hotel rate.[5][6][7] Since its launch in 2010, HotelTonight has been downloaded by more than 15 million users.[8][9][10]

History

HotelTonight was founded in December 2010 by the entrepreneurs Sam Shank, Jared Simon, and Chris Bailey.[11][12] Shank, the company's CEO, had previously founded two travel startups, DealBase.com and TravelPost.[13] TravelPost, founded in 2004, hosts hotel reviews, and DealBase, founded in 2008, aggregates and compares hotel deals.[14][15][16][17] Shank said he wanted to create a "service that can solve the problem of 'I need a hotel right now' and getting you quickly into a room at a great price."[18]

When it first launched in January 2011, the app was only available in the US and on Apple products.[19][20] The app launched on Android devices in July 2011 and now includes cities in Europe, Canada, Central America and South America .[21][22][23] HotelTonight has raised $80.7 million in funding from U.S. Venture Partners, Accel Partners, Battery Ventures, First Round Capital, GGV Capital and Coatue Management.[9][24][25][26]

In October 2014, HotelTonight expanded from same-day only bookings to allowing users to book rooms up to 7 days in advance.[27][10]

In August 2016, HotelTonight announced it is profitable and planning for an IPO. [28]
