Hu Ge (born September 20, 1982 in Shanghai), is a Chinese actor and singer. While studying at the Shanghai Theater Academy, he was invited to play the leading role Li Xiaoyao in the 2005 television series Chinese Paladin, and immediately skyrocketed to fame as one of China's most popular actors. In September 2012, he was nominated for Best Newcomer at the 31st Hundred Flowers Awards for his role as Lin Juemin in Chinese historical film 1911. His most successful and renowned character is Mei Changsu (梅长苏) in the wildly popular 2015 TV Drama Nirvana in Fire, for which he received Best Actor Award at the 22nd Magnolia Awards. Hu Ge is currently managed by Hu Ge Studio (胡歌工作室), contracted under Tangren Media.
Early life
Hu Ge was born in Shanghai in 1982. He received his first training in performing arts in Little Stars Performing Arts School run by Shanghai Media Group (SMG). Hu Ge attended Shanghai Xiang Yang Elementary School (1989–94) and Shanghai No.2 High School (1994-2001), both known for their educational rigor.
In addition to excellent academic work, Hu Ge's talents in a variety of extracurricular endeavors were also recognized. At age 14, Hu Ge started to host a popular TV show Sunshine Youth on Shanghai TV Education Channel[1] for three years. Meanwhile, he was also selected to host a program in East Radio Shanghai. Hu Ge began his acting career by appearing in TV commercials, which helped him gain financial independence before graduating from high school.
In 2001, Hu Ge was admitted to two prestigious art institutes in China: The Central Academy of Drama and Shanghai Theatre Academy. Hu Ge decided to attend the latter, particularly attracted by its strong major in acting.
Career
Beginnings and Rise to Fame
While he was still studying, Hu Ge was recommended by his friend to Chinese Entertainment Shanghai (now known as Tangren Media) where he acted as a voice dub actor for the 2002 drama The book and the sword. Following which, he signed on with the company. After appearing in numerous commercials, Hu participated in the movie Pretend There's No Feeling as a minor character. His first television appearance was in the 2004 drama Dandelion.
In 2005, Hu Ge played Li Xiaoyao in Chinese Paladin, a TV adaptation of the action RPG The Legend of Sword and Fairy. This role shot Hu Ge to fame in China and made him a household name overnight. He was especially popular among younger viewers who grew up playing the game the show was based on. Hu also recorded two songs for the series' soundtrack, which marked the beginning of his singing career.
The same year, he starred in Strange Tales of Liao Zhai, based on Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio. The series premièred on Guangdong Television station in August and achieved the highest rating of the year for the Guangdong region.
At the 2nd Enlight Media Awards, Hu Ge was awarded the Best New Actor and Actor with Most Potential awards for his role in Chinese Paladin.
Rising Popularity in Asia and Forays into film and theater
2006-2008
After Chinese Paladin, Hu Ge embarked on a number of other TV projects, most of which had a wuxia theme, most notably The Little Fairy and The Young Warriors. In The Little Fairy, he plays a dim-witted male lead, and sang two OSTs for the drama. After the series was broadcast in Taiwan, Hu Ge began to gain popularity there.
On 31 October 2006, he made his debut as a singer and released his first EP, titled Treasure (珍惜), which featured three songs.
Hu Ge also acted in a number of films during that period, including The Ghost Inside and The 601st Phone Call, which won him the Best Newcomer Award at the 6th QQ Entertainment Awards. In late 2008, he co-starred with Wu Chun and Charlene Choi in The Butterfly Lovers, a film based on the famous Chinese legend Butterfly Lovers.
He was then chosen to play the role of Guo Jing in The Legend of the Condor Heroes, an adaptation of Louis Cha's novel of the same title. The drama was aired simultaneously in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and Hu started to gain more recognition in Asia.
On May 15, 2008, Hu Ge released his first full-length music album, titled Start (出發), including ten songs. Following the release of his album, Hu Ge embarked on his first solo tour in Shanghai.
2009–2010
In 2009, Hu Ge reprised his role as Li Xiaoyao in Chinese Paladin 3, simultaneously acting as two other characters in the drama.[1] The television series was broadcast on four major TV channels, and garnered a strong audience following. Chinese Paladin 3 was eventually awarded the Ratings Contribution award at the 2009 Sichuan TV Festival. Apart from establishing Hu Ge's fame as one of the most sought-after actors in mainland China, it also boosted his co-stars Wallace Huo, Yang Mi, Cecilia Liu and Tiffany Tang to fame.
The following year, he starred as the male protagonist Yi Xiaochuan in the 2010 Chinese television series The Myth, based on the 2005 Hong Kong film of the same title. It acquired very high viewership ratings,[2] and boosted Hu Ge's popularity to a new high, winning him several awards, including Best Actor in the ancient genre at the 2010 Huading Awards.[3]
2011–2012
To avoid being typecast, Hu Ge subsequently stopped accepting any role in period dramas after he finished filming The Myth in 2009. He took on leading roles in modern dramas, such as Cafe, Modern People and Unbeatable, as well as the national historical drama Shangri-La, which was named one of the Top Ten Productions of 2011. Hu Ge also acted in films, taking on the role of the revolutionary Lin Juemin in 2011 historical film 1911, which earned him a Best New Actor nomination at the 31st Hundred Flowers Awards.
In 2012, Hu Ge became the producer and male anti-hero in Xuan-Yuan Sword: Scar of Sky, a television drama adaption of the popular role-playing game developed by Taiwanese company Softstar Entertainment Inc. This marks his return to period dramas, and reunited him with Chinese Paladin 3 co-stars Cecilia Liu and Tiffany Tang. Hu's excellent portrayal of his character's paradoxical personality earned him another Best Actor in the ancient genre at the 2012 Huading Awards,[4] as well as the Most Popular Actor at the 4th TV Drama Awards.
In the same year, Hu Ge participated in CES produced nano-movie Refresh 3+7. He wrote the script for one of the stories Lights from the City, and participated in 4 out of the 10 stories. The nano-movie aired on Dragon TV in late 2012. The same year, he starred in the film Diva, playing a blind massager.
2013 has often been referred to as Hu Ge's year of theatre plays. Hu Ge acted as Patient No.5 in Stan Lai's A Dream Like a Dream and then as Xu Zhuang Tu in Forever Yin Xueyan, a play based on Pai Hsien-yung's novel of the same title performed in the Shanghai dialect. His performance in A Dream Like A Dream especially surprised many theatre critics, and garnered positive reviews all round;[5][6] he was awarded Best Actor at the 2nd Denny Awards. Hu Ge's performance in the two plays also garnered him the Most Popular Theatre Actor of the Year at the BQ Magazine Popular Artists Ceremony.
Career's Peak and Critical Acclaim
2014
In 2014, Hu Ge starred in his first modern family drama Life Revelations alongside Yan Ni. His role in the drama won him the Most Popular Actor Award at the 9th Seoul International Drama Awards, his first acting award outside of mainland China.
He then played the second male lead, Mo Xun in the Chinese drama series Sound of the Desert, based on the novel Ballad of the Desert (also known as Da Mo Yao) written by Tong Hua. Although originally slated to play Wei Wu Ji, Hu Ge asked if he could play Mo Xun instead as he wanted to challenge himself in a new role. The drama aired in October and gained huge popularity.
This was followed by a supporting role in Forty Nine Days: Fiesta, which won him a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the 21st Shanghai Television Festival. With the airing of three popular dramas back-to-back, Hu Ge won was awarded Most Popular Actor at the 6th TV Drama Awards.
2015–2016
In the following year, Hu took on leading roles in Nirvana in Fire, The Disguiser and Good Times. On August 30, 2015, the espionage series The Disguiser began airing on Hunan TV and quickly gained one of the highest viewership ratings of the year.
The success of The Disguiser was followed by the airing of Nirvana in Fire on September 19, 2015. Nirvana in Fire was a turning point in Hu's acting career,[7] and a commercial and critical success in its own right, surpassing ten million views by the second day,[8] and raking in daily internet views of over three hundred million by the end of its run. Global Times praised the story, acting and cinematography of the series, stating that it had restored viewers' confidence in Chinese period dramas.[9]
On October 16, 2015, Hu Ge's modern romance drama Good Times premiered on Dragon TV, becoming the channel's first grand production TV drama.
Following the airing of these dramas, Hu Ge experienced the highest peak in his career. By the end of 2015, he had received multiple awards. On October 31, 2015, he was awarded the Best Actor Award at the 2nd Hengdian Wenrong Awards for his performance in The Disguiser. In November, he attended the Asia Television Drama Conference's 10 year anniversary award ceremony held in Japan, and was awarded the Special Contribution award. He won another Best Actor award at the 7th TV Drama Awards for his performance in Nirvana in Fire. At the 1st annual China Quality Television Drama Ceremony held in March 2016, he garnered the Grand Award for Best Performance, as well as Most Marketable Actor.
In April 2016, he starred in youth inspirational drama Go! Goal! Fighting!, playing a soccer coach. In June, he attended the 22nd Shanghai Television Festival and won the Magnolia Award for Best Actor for his role in Nirvana of Fire. He was also invited by Armani Milan's Fashion Week for Emporio Armani's Spring/Summer Menswear show, where he collaborated with Giorgio Armani.
Following his phenomenal surge in popularity and public awareness, Hu has also been appointed the Shanghai Tourism Ambassador.[10] Professional designers from Madame Tussauds Shanghai took measurements from Hu to make two wax figures of him; one of himself and one of his character Mei Changsu from Nivrana in Fire, which would be displayed in September 2016.
Hu then filmed The Game of Hunting , a drama produced by critically acclaimed director and screenwriter Jiang Wei.[11] The series is scheduled to air on Hunan TV in 2017.
On October 16, Hu won the Audience's Favorite Actor and Most Popular Actor awards at the 28th China TV Golden Eagle Award for his performance in Nirvana in Fire.
In November, it was announced that Hu has been cast in the television drama Emperor's Conquest alongside Zhang Ziyi in her first small screen appearance.
Accident
Hu Ge was involved in a car accident on 29 August 2006 while travelling from Hengdian to Shanghai on the highway. He survived with severe injuries while his assistant died. Hu had to undergo surgery and the entire healing process took approximately one year. The filming of The Legend of the Condor Heroes, which he was working on then, was temporarily halted due to his injury,[12] in addition to being unable to complete promoting his finished project The Young Warriors, with his fellow cast members.[13] Hu Ge expresses how he felt of the incident through the performance of his single "Dare to Love" (去爱吧), and filmed a music video with his co-star from the two series and friend Cecilia Liu.[14]
Soon after the accident, he also published a book Scavenger of Happiness (幸福的拾荒者), filled with his thoughts on the accident and post events, interesting childhood events, well wishes from good friends and previously unexposed pictures. This book documented in detail the process of how Hu Ge changed from a young idol with a smooth career path into an increasingly mature actor who could truthfully face life's problems as a scavenger of happiness.[15]
Personal life
Hu Ge is known to be close friends with Wallace Huo, Cecilia Liu, Tiffany Tang, Eddie Peng, and Yuan Hong.
Hu Ge's past relationships include actress Xue Jianing, whom he dated early in his career, and Jiang Shuying, his co-star in Go! Goal! Fighting!.
He has five cats.
