The 'Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing Jabalpur' (Hindi: भारतीय सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी अभिकल्पन एवं विनिर्माण संस्थान, जबलपुर, IIITD&M Jabalpur) is an Indian Institute of Information Technology and a deemed university in Jabalpur that focuses on Information Technology enabled Design and Manufacturing. It was declared to be Institute of National Importance by Government of India under IIIT Act.[1]
History
The Indian Institute of Information Technology-Design and Manufacturing, was established in year 2005 by the Government of India under the Indian Societies Registration Act, for imparting skills to engineering students who can use IT in the field of Design and Manufacturing. Primary goal of the institute is to educate and train engineers who are dealing with design and manufacturing of engineering goods. The task of incubation has been entrusted on Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur). The Director, Faculty and Staff members of IIT Kanpur worked together to achieve the goal.
Commonly known as IIITDM Jabalpur is a part of league of 4 Indian Institutes of Information Technology funded by Ministry of Human Resource Development (India) along with Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Gwalior, Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad, and Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Kanchipuram. It has been accorded the status of "Deemed University" in 2009 and "Institute of National Importance" in 2014 by the Government of India just after 9 years of its inception, thus having autonomy to frame courses and curriculum.
Indo-Japanese Collaboration
The founding director of the institute Prof. Sanjeev Bhargava forged an IIIT D&M Jabalpur - Japan collaboration which is an aspect of a wider partnership between Japan and India. The Institute is being developed under this partnership as an Institute which focuses on using Information Technology to implement Design and Manufacturing.
During his trip to India in April, 2005 the Prime Minister of Japan, Mr. Junichiro Koizumi signed an agreement with Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India “to make every effort to collaborate towards the development of the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design & Manufacturing Jabalpur”.[2] As a precursor Dr Manmohan Singh's visit to Japan in December 2006, a team headed by Shri Sudeep Banerjee visited Tokyo in November 2006. It was decided that the following team from Japan would work out the cooperation modalities and methodologies for assisting the new Institute [3]
- Manabu Kiuchi, Emeritus Fellow, University of Tokyo: Overall Program Leader
- Yoshimo Ito, Emeritus Fellow, Tokyo Institute of Technology: Program Leader for the courses of Mechanical Engineering
- Takashi Nanya, Professor, University of Tokyo: Program Leader for the courses of Electronics & Communication Engineering
- Hiroshi Suzuki, Executive Director, GE (Energy), Japan: Program Leader for the courses in Computer Science & Engineering
For effective implementation of this collaboration, Government of Japan has formed a consortium of six universities and six industries.
Participant Universities: University of Tokyo, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tohoku University, Kyushu University, Shibaura Institute of Technology, Kanagawa Institute of Technology.
Participant Industries: Hitachi, Toshiba, Amada, Okuma, Sumitomo Metals and GE Energy.[4]
It was also agreed that faculty members from the consortium institutes/universities will come to India and will help the Institute in the teaching of advanced level courses in these areas.
The Memorandum of Cooperation was signed during the visit of the Indian Prime Minister to Japan in December 2006.[5]
Courses offered
The.[6] Bachelor in Design (B.Des.) course is being commenced from 2015.
Admissions
Undergraduate Students are admitted to these courses on the basis of the All India Rank in the Joint Entrance Examination(Main) (JEE MAIN) and the UCEED.[7] For admissions to PG level courses, the GATE (for M.Tech. programs)/CEED (Common Entrance Examination for Design) scores of candidates are considered along with the CPI (or Equivalent Grading System, e.g. CGPA) maintained throughout the Graduate course undertaken by the student.[8]
Campus
The institute started functioning from the Jabalpur Engineering College's campus in 2005 until its permanent campus was constructed. The Institute was allotted a campus space of 300 acres (1.2 km2), close to the Domestic Airport and Dumna Nature Reserve Park, in 2006 following the appointment of Dr. Sanjeev Bhargava as director.
Construction of the Core lab Complex and Hostels started thereafter and was completed in June 2009, following the Institute being granted Deemed-to-be University status that month.[9]
The campus also includes three hostels. Two of them (Hall-3 and Hall-4) have triple seated rooms and one (Hall of Residence-1) is single seated. Several Hall of Residences are still under construction.[10]
Research and Development
The institute also focuses on proficient R&D skills through the efficient use of technology. The institute carries out active research in the fields of Innovative Design and Manufacturing (Embedded System Design, Design of Control Systems, VLSI, CAD/CAM, Design of Smart Structures, MEMS, Intelligent Product Design, Design of Energy Systems); Graphics, Vision and Image Processing (Computer Graphics, Image Processing, Geometric Modelling, Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition, Bio metrics, Simulation, Computer Animation); Advanced Manufacturing (Rapid Prototyping, Micro Nano Fabrication, Manufacturing Culture) ; Data and Knowledge Engineering (Computational Linguistics, Data Engineering, Computational Linguistics, Data Engineering, Natural Language Processing, Artificial Intelligence, Parallel Algorithms, Human Computer Interaction, Software Engineering) and Bio medical Signal Processing. The Institute carries out research in the form of thesis pursued by its postgraduate students in these areas along sponsored projects carried out by members of faculty in some of these areas.[11]
Counseling Service
The Institute also has Counseling Service.[12]
Fests
The students have been organizing annual festivals Tarang (Cultural Festival), Abhikalpan (Science & Technology festival) and Gusto (Sports festival) in the campus regularly ever since the inception of the Institute. These festivals have become very popular among the students of other colleges of Jabalpur also and a significant number of students of other institutes from India participate in these events. In addition to this, student themselves operate various clubs (17) in which they organize year-round activities. The Institute also has its own cricket, football, volleyball, basketball ground, badminton court and tennis court.
