Immigration Street

Immigration Street is a Channel 4 documentary series about the people living in Derby Street, Southampton, England. This area is ethnically diverse with a large number of immigrants. [1]

It started as a spin off of the show Benefits Street, originally set for six episodes, but reduced due to protest from local residents. [2]

Concerns from the community

The local police asked to view the series before it is aired, concerned that the show could make Derby Road a target for far-right groups. [3]

A Member of Parliament for Southampton Test, Alan Whitehead, stated that over 95% of the people in the area questioned about this, were opposed to the filming, and concerned how their community would be portrayed. [4]

The chair of the Southampton City Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), Bitterne GP Steve Townsend, said: “We wholeheartedly support the local community in its condemnation of the programme especially as the potential harm it will do will outweigh any public interest.”[5]
