Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad (IIT Palakkad) is a public autonomous engineering and research institute located in Palakkad, Kerala. It is one of the five new IITs proposed in the 2014 Union budget of India. [2] The campus was inaugurated on 3rd August 2015 at the temporary campus site located inside the Ahalia Integrated Campus, Palakkad.[1][3]

Till a Director is appointed by MHRD for IIT Palakkad, the Director of IIT Madras, Dr. Bhaskar Ramamurthi will be the Mentor Director. IIT Madras has deputed a batch of experienced professors including the ones recently retired, former deans and heads of various departments to the new campus as both permanent and visiting professors.[4]

Campus and location

IIT Palakkad is initially functioning out of the campus of Ahalia Integrated campus, while the permanent campus would be coming up at Pudussery West in 500 acres of land. The land acquisition for the permanent campus of the IIT was expected to be complete by mid-February 2016. [5] However, the acquisition has been further delayed.

Temporary Campus has a 55,000 sq. ft. academic building, which houses six class rooms, a seminar room, an auditorium, library, cafeteria, and faculty offices. It also provides hostel and sports and recreational facilities with access to high speed internet. Students have facilities at par with other IIT's.[3]

The construction of the IIT Palakkad permanent campus had been delayed due the slow progress of land acquisition at the 500 acre Pudussery West site by the State Government of Kerala.[6] The construction is to begin by mid-December 2016[7]

Academics

IIT Palakkad currently offers four-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes in different engineering disciplines. Similar to the other IITs, admission to undergraduate programmes based on qualification through the Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE).

IIT Palakkad started its operation with the following 4 departments [8]
