Jamar Martin (born April 12, 1980 in Canton, Ohio) is a former National Football League fullback. He played for the Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets. He played college football for Ohio State University.
High School Years
Martin attended McKinley High School in Canton, Ohio, where he lettered in football. As a senior, he started at fullback and outside linebacker, helping lead his team to a 14-0 record and the Ohio Big School State Championship.
College Years
Martin accepted a scholarship to play for Ohio State University, where he was a three-year starter and a dominant blocker at fullback.[1] He finished his career with 61 carries for 226 yards (4.0 avg) and 4 rushing touchdowns in 47 games (29 starts). He also had 22 receptions for 211 yards (9.6 avg) and 2 receiving touchdowns.[2]
Professional career
Dallas Cowboys
Martin was ranked by the Dallas Cowboys as the best blocking fullback in the 2002 NFL Draft,[3] so they selected him in the fourth round (129th overall) to compete against the incumbent Robert Thomas. As a rookie, he suffered an ACL tear in his right knee during the first contact drill in training camp and was placed on the injured reserve list.[4][5] The following year, he played 14 games mainly on the special teams units.
It has been speculated that he was never the same player following his injury and was eventually waived on September 5, 2004, when the team opted to keep Darian Barnes in his place.[6]
Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins claimed him off waivers.[7] He was released on September 3, 2005.
New Orleans Saints
After being out of football for a season, he signed as a free agent with the New Orleans Saints on July 27, 2006. He was cut on August 10.
New York Jets
The New York Jets claimed him off the waiver wire.[8] He was released on September 20, 2006.
New York Dragons (AFL)
He signed with the New Orleans VooDoo of the Arena Football League to play the 2008 season, before being traded to New York Dragons.[9] He would eventually refuse to report to the Dragons.
Personal life
Martin is now serving as a defensive line coach at Westerville South High School, in Westerville, OH.[10]
