The Japanese Long-eared Bat (Plecotus sacrimontis) is endemic to Japan, where it is found in Hokkaido, Honshu and Shikoku. It has distinctive, long ears, hence its Japanese name, the 'rabbit bat'. Formerly included as a subspecies of the European bat Plecotus auritus, genetic studies now indicate Plecotus sacrimontis is a separate species.[2]
Description
Japanese Long-eared Bats may be of two types, either dark or pale, but in each case predominantly grey. The ears are considerably larger than the head.
Habitat
The bats roost in caves, tunnels and buildings. Maternity colonies are found from April to August.
