Jody Chiang or Jiang Hui (Chinese: 江蕙; pinyin: Jiāng Huì; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Kang Hūi), born Jiang Shuhui (Chinese: 江淑惠; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Kang Siok-hūi), is a Taiwanese popular singer. Her nickname is Second Sister (二姐) because she is the second eldest of four siblings. She is often called the Queen of Taiwanese music.[1] She began recording in the 1980s and maintains an active career today, even though she stopped competing for Best Taiwanese singer award after 2003. Her trademark ballads and folk songs are typically sung in Taiwanese. Her role in Taiwan's popular music scene is often compared to that of Teresa Teng. She is the older sister of Chiang Shu-na.

Despite starting her commercial singing career in 1981, she never held a concert until 2008.[2] The singer has released 60 albums and won eight Golden Melody Awards over her career.[3]

Farewell concerts

On January 2, 2015, Chiang announced that she would end her singing career in that year with 16 farewell concerts between July and September in Taiwan. The tickets were sold out within seconds and caused a riot due to large crowds not be able to get tickets complaining about the promoter Kuang Ham's failed online ticket selling system. The news became national and then dominated the headlines for days. Jody Chiang's farewell concert tickets overnight became the hottest item and the hardest thing to get in Taiwan. All kind of memes about how difficult to score a Jody Chiang's concert ticket were created on the internet and social media. The critics call it "Jody Chiang phenomenon". The singer later decided to add nine more shows to total 25 shows because of high demand. The music industry believes that Jody Chiang could easily double or triple the number of shows and still sell out the tickets if she wants to. The concerts were held in Taipei Arena and Kaohsiung Area with her finale in Kaohsiung Arena on September 13, 2015.

Personal life

She is the second eldest of four children with a tough upbringing. Her father was a glove puppet master, but because of the low income, she and Chiang Shu-na started singing in restaurants and pubs, as such, she did not graduated from primary school until she was 15.

In 2009, she was reported to be chased for large amounts of debt due to her eldest sister's gambling problem.[4] She had since severed ties with her.
