Kalpana Patowary (Assamese: কল্পনা পাটোৱাৰী) is an Indian playback and folk singer from Assam. She is a disciple of Ustad Gulam Mustafa Khan and has been influenced by the bard of Brahmaputra Bhupen Hazarika. She sings in 30 different languages. She participated in the reality show Junoon - Kuchh Kar Dikhaane Ka (2008) on NDTV Imagine. Patowary has lent her vocals to numerous Bhojpuri songs and Bollywood numbers in films including Billu and R. Rajkumar. Although she has many folk and popular songs to her credit, Bhojpuri music has been her most dedicated foray.[1]
Early life and background
Patowary was born on 27 October 1978 in Barpeta district in Assam. A graduate in English literature from Cotton College, Assam and Visharad in Indian Classical Music, Lucknow in 1996, Patowary started publicly performing at the age of 4. Trained in kamrupiya and goalporiya Assamese folk music by her father Sri Bipin Patowary, a folk singer himself, Patowary is also trained as Sangeet Visharad in Indian classical music from Bhatkhande Music Institute University, Lucknow. Patowary has a five-octave range and has been hailed as a prodigy in the world of Bhojpuri film and traditional folk forms. She has mastered many forms of Bhojpuri folk music including Purvi, Pachra, Kajri, Sohar, Vivaah geet, Chaita, and Nautanki. She has been credited with reviving and promoting Bhojpuri music all over the world on the international stage.[2]
Patowary has worked extensively on the works of Bhikhari Thakur and has released an album commemorating his life and work.[3]
Career
Patowary has served as a role model for active involvement for both the Bhojpuri traditional folk forms and Bhojpuri film music. She has transformed the Bhojpuri singing art from a small regional industry to the full-fledged high quality vocal art in the international front. Her work in MTV Coke Studio 2014 and 2015 demonstrates this. She is the first Bhojpuri singer to present an age old tradition of Khadi Birha tradition to international platforms.
In 2013, Patowary made an appearance in a documentary film, Bidesia in Bambai. Released on December 8, 2013, it is a look at Mumbai through the lens of the migrant worker and his music. She was invited to perform on a 15-day tour in four Latin American countries presented by The Ministry of Cultural Affairs on the occasion of Indian Arrival Day.
Chhaprahiya Purvi
Patowary is the first woman to record and sing the Chhaprahiya Purvi style. Prior to her work, Purvi was a male preserve.
Bhojpuri cinema
Patowary is a singer of Bhojpuri Cinema and is the best-selling female artist. In 2013, she debuted in producer Sudakar Pandey's film Chalat Musafir Moh Lio Re in the title role. Patowary played the role of a dalit girl. She received positive reviews for her acting as well from critics.

" Music barons in India were left gaping when Kalpana Patowary, a singer of Indian folk music, was signed on by British recording company Virgin EMI Records in April. They were all the more surprised to see the soaring international demand for her Bhojpuri music album with songs about migration. It seems Bhojpuri folk songs on migration are witnessing resurgence on an unexpected scale."
