Kolaghat is a census town situated on the banks of the Rupnarayan River in the Midnapore East district of West Bengal. It is located in the Panskura II CD Block of the Tamluk subdivision. It is also the headquarters of the outback panskura. (Panskura II block). Kolaghat Thermal Power Station is located here, which is the largest power sector in the state and managed by West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL), a department of the State Government of West Bengal,

Geography

Kolaghat is located at 22°26′N 87°52′E / 22.43°N 87.87°E / 22.43; 87.87.[1] It is located in the Panskura–II community development block of the Tamluk subdivision.[2] It is also the headquarters of the Panskura–II CD block.[3] Kolaghat police station serves the town.[2]

Demographics

As per 2011 Census of India Kolaghat had a total population of 25,191 of which 12,890 (51%) were males and 12,301 (49%) were females. Population below 6 years was 2,349. The total number of literates in Kolaghat was 19,909 (87.16% of the population over 6 years).[4]

As of 2001 India census,[5] Kolaghat had a population of 23707. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Kolaghat has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 64%. In Kolaghat, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Police station

Kolaghat police station has jurisdiction over Kolaghat and Sahid Matangini CD Blocks.[6][7]

Economy

West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited (WBPDCL) of West Bengal Government runs the 6 X 210 MW Thermal Power Station at Kolaghat. It is the largest in the state sector.[8]

Transport

Kolaghat is on the Golden Quadrilateral. It is 54.4 km from Kolkata and 60.45 km from Kharagpur. The Kolaghat Bridge (namely Sarat Setu) is the only which connects the South India.[9] NH-6 (namely Bombay road) passes through Kolaghat.

Education

In 1998, the College of Engineering and Management, Kolaghat[10] was set up here. In 2013, The Kolaghat Govt. Polytecnic was set up here, The high schools are Kola Union High School,[11] K.T.P.P. High School (K.T.P.P. Township), Kolaghat Jogendra Girls High School, Gopalnagar Kaliprasanna Kar Institution, Baishnabchak Mahesh Chandra High School(with hostel facility), Khadinan Adarsha Primary School are some prominent schools in the locality.

Famous people

Supriya Mondal, winner of gold and silver medals in National meet and silver in Beijing Commonwealth games resides in Kolaghat.
